Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

By 1:00 PM, Grant was sitting in the grand, glass-walled conference room of Vance & Associates, the premier legal firm occupying the top three floors of the downtown Vance Tower.

Sitting across from him was not a greasy strip-mall lawyer, but Eleanor Vance—Arthur’s younger sister and the most feared corporate attorney in the federal circuit. She was a woman in her late fifties, wearing an immaculate white power suit, her sharp blue eyes assessing Grant like a bug under a microscope.

Beside Grant sat his own attorney, a nervous, sweat-stained man named Harold, whom Grant had been forced to pay with his last remaining gold watch because his bank accounts were locked.

On the table between them lay a single, thick leather binder.

"Let us keep this brief, Mr. Miller," Eleanor said, her voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. She slid the binder across the polished marble table. "This is the unconditional divorce settlement and asset transfer agreement."

Harold quickly grabbed the binder, flipping through the pages. His face grew paler with every page he turned.

"Mrs. Vance... Eleanor," Harold stammered, wiping his brow with a soaked handkerchief. "This... this isn't a settlement. This is total financial execution! You are demanding he surrender his 60% equity in Miller Capital, the Lake Forest estate, his personal vehicles, his stock portfolio, and pay two million dollars in immediate compensatory damages for spousal abuse!"

"That is correct," Eleanor replied calmly, taking a sip from her porcelain tea cup.

"My client will be left with literally nothing!" Harold protested, standing up. "He’ll be bankrupt! He’ll be living on the street!"

Eleanor raised a single, manicured eyebrow. "Mr. Miller has a choice, Harold. He can sign these documents today, surrender his assets peacefully, and leave this city with the clothes on his back."

She leaned forward, her smile dropping entirely, revealing the terrifying predator beneath the elegant exterior.

"Or," Eleanor continued softly, "he can refuse. And within one hour, my office will file criminal charges for aggravated felony assault, domestic violence, attempt to cause grievous bodily harm to an unborn child, and corporate tax fraud based on the six years of off-shore accounting records my brother’s team retrieved from his home office last night."

Grant gasped, his blood running cold. "Tax fraud...? You can't prove that!"

Eleanor reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a sleek black USB drive, tossing it casually onto the table.

"Your former assistant, whom you fired three months ago without severance, was more than happy to hand over the duplicate ledgers in exchange for a high-paying position at Vance Global," Eleanor said smoothly. "In a federal penitentiary, Grant, a man with your soft hands and refined tastes will not last three weeks. Especially when my brother controls the guards' union."

Grant turned to his lawyer, his eyes wild with terror. "Harold... do something! Tell her we can fight this in court!"

Harold looked at the USB drive, then looked at Eleanor Vance, and slowly closed his briefcase.

"Sign the papers, Grant," Harold advised, his voice trembling. "Sign them right now. Because if this goes to a criminal judge tomorrow, you won't just lose your money. You will lose your life."
