Chapter 2 - The Horizon of Flight

The cabin of the private Gulfstream jet was a sanctuary of soft leather, polished walnut, and profound quiet. As the aircraft leveled out at thirty-five thousand feet, heading east across the Atlantic toward Spain, Elena Salazar finally let out a breath she felt she had been holding for ten long years.

Noah was curled up in the window seat, his beloved dinosaur backpack serving as a pillow as he drifted off to sleep, exhausted by the emotional whirlwind of the morning. Lily was sitting across from him, happily arranging her colored pencils in a perfect rainbow row on the fold-out table, completely oblivious to the war that had just ended on the streets below them.

Elena looked down at the documents in her lap. The thick envelope from Attorney Dawson contained the final executed copies of the divorce decree.

She turned the pages, her eyes tracing Adrian’s bold, arrogant signature at the bottom of every sheet. He had been so eager to sign, so desperate to rid himself of what he deemed "the past," that he had completely ignored the addendums. He had assumed the schedules listed only their standard marital assets—their suburban home, a few standard savings accounts, and the vehicle leases.

He had not realized that Attorney Dawson, working closely with forensic accountants over six agonizing months, had unearthed the labyrinth of shell companies Adrian had used to hide his family’s multi-million-dollar inheritance and the core shares of Castillo Holdings. By signing the boilerplate "global waiver of asset review," Adrian had legally relinquished his rights to every entity listed in the hidden appendices.

"Mommy?" Lily’s soft voice broke through her thoughts.

Elena looked up, her expression instantly softening into a warm, genuine smile. "Yes, my love?"

"Are we going to live in a place with old castles?" Lily asked, her eyes wide with innocent wonder. "Like in my storybooks?"

"Yes, sweetheart," Elena said, reaching across the aisle to gently squeeze her daughter’s hand. "We’re going to a beautiful city called Barcelona. There are castles, beautiful beaches, and churches that look like they were carved out of sand. And most importantly, we are going to be safe."

Noah stirred, opening one heavy eye. "Is Dad ever going to visit us?"

The question hung in the air, heavy and sharp. Elena looked at her son, seeing the deep, residual hurt in his quiet eyes. She refused to lie to him, but she also refused to poison his spirit with his father's cruelty.

"Your father has chosen a different path, Noah," Elena said carefully, choosing her words with the precision of a surgeon. "Sometimes, people get so lost looking for what they think they want that they forget to love what they already have. But you need to know something, both of you. You are not weight. You are my entire world. And everything I did today, I did so you would never have to feel small ever again."

Noah looked at her for a long moment, then reached out and pulled the strap of his backpack tighter against his chest. "I like Attorney Dawson's driver. He gave me two boxes of juice."

Elena laughed, a light, cathartic sound that felt completely foreign to her throat. "He’s a very good man, Noah."

She leaned back against the headrest, looking out the window at the vast, endless blanket of white clouds below. Her mind flashed back to her grandfather, Mateo Salazar. He had immigrated to America decades ago, leaving behind a beautiful, centuries-old estate in the hills of Catalonia—a property Adrian had always mocked as "useless European dirt."

When Mateo passed away, he had left the estate exclusively to Elena, protected by a strict pre-marital trust that the Castillo family could never touch. For ten years, Adrian had forced her to live under his roof, under his rules, making her feel like a charity case in her own life.

She pulled out her phone, which was connected to the aircraft’s high-speed satellite internet. A single notification appeared from Attorney Dawson.

The clinic appointment is over. Adrian has discovered the truth about Chloe. The medical fraud has been exposed, and the corporate transfer is complete. He is currently bankrupt, publicly exposed, and desperate. His lawyers are frantically calling my office, claiming fraud. I told them to speak to the judge who finalized the decree. Enjoy Barcelona, Elena. The crown is back on the rightful head.

Elena stared at the screen. She didn't feel a surge of vindictive joy. She didn't feel the need to celebrate Adrian's ruin. All she felt was an overwhelming, beautiful sense of peace. The chains had broken, and for the first time in her adult life, she was flying toward a destination she had chosen for herself.
