Chapter 6 - The Iron Gate of Justice

The narrow plaza of Sant Cugat erupted into immediate chaos. The elderly tutor turned around, shrieking in alarm, while the burly Spanish driver bolted from the vehicle, his hand moving toward his jacket where a licensed security firearm was concealed.

Adrian, panicked by the boy's loud, bilingual resistance, tried to drag Noah toward his rented car, but Noah went completely limp, dropping his weight to the cobblestones—a self-defense tactic he had learned in his international school's safety courses.

"Noah, shut up! I'm your father!" Adrian hissed, trying to hoist the boy up by his clothing.

Before Adrian could lift him, a powerful hand gripped his shoulder, spinning him around with enough force to crack his collarbone against the stone wall of the arcade. It wasn't the driver.

It was Alejandro Dawson.

Alejandro looked magnificent in his fury, his eyes flashing like lightning. Behind him, three local Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan regional police) officers converged on the scene, their weapons drawn.

"Step away from the child, Mr. Castillo," Alejandro said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm, resonant frequency that commanded the entire plaza.

Adrian stepped back, his hands raised, his face twisted in a mixture of fear and rage. "He's my son! This is an international parental kidnapping! She stole my kids!"

The police officers didn't hesitate. They shoved Adrian against the stone pillar, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Noah scrambled backward into the open arms of his driver, who immediately shielded him from view. Lily was crying, clutching the tutor's skirt, but she was entirely safe.

From around the corner, Elena appeared. She ran across the cobblestones, her face pale with terror, but as soon as she saw Noah in the driver's arms, she fell to her knees, pulling both of her children into a fierce, breathless embrace.

"I'm okay, Mommy," Noah whispered, his voice trembling slightly but intact. "I used my words. Just like you told me."

Elena kissed his forehead, her tears warm against his skin. "You were so brave, Noah. So incredibly brave."

She stood up slowly, handing the children to the tutor and the driver, who immediately escorted them to the safety of the armored vehicle. Elena then turned to face Adrian, who was being held firmly by two police officers, his face smeared with grease from the stone pillar.

"Elena, you can't do this!" Adrian yelled, his voice echoing off the ancient buildings. "I have rights! I am Adrian Castillo!"

Elena walked over until she was standing just inches from him. She didn't look angry; she looked completely detached, as if she were inspecting a broken piece of old machinery.

"You have no rights here, Adrian," Elena said softly. "You crossed an ocean to touch my son after calling him dead weight. You thought America’s legal system was slow, but you forgot that Spain has very specific laws regarding international harassment, child endangerment, and attempted abduction."

Alejandro stepped forward, holding a legal folder. "Mr. Castillo, you were served with a permanent international restraining order three months ago via your New York counsel. Your entry into this municipality constitutes a high-level felony under article 225 of the Spanish Penal Code. You will not be granted bail. You will be held in the Brians 1 Penitentiary center awaiting an expedited federal trial."

Adrian looked at Elena, his eyes pleading, desperate, searching for any trace of the woman who used to beg him for love. "Elena, please... for the sake of the family name. Don't do this to me."

"The Castillo name means nothing to us anymore, Adrian," Elena said, her voice clear and resonant. "My children bear the name Salazar now. Their legal name changes were finalized yesterday."

As the police shoved Adrian into the back of the dark transport van, his screams were cut short by the heavy slam of the steel doors. Elena stood in the historic plaza, her hand resting gently on Alejandro’s arm, watching the vehicle disappear into the narrow streets. The final desperate gamble of the Castillo empire had failed, and the iron gate of justice had officially closed behind them.
