Chapter 1 - The Descent from the Bridge

The glass walkway of Terminal C felt like the boundary line between two lives. Behind me lay a decade of quiet compliance, of playing the doting wife who dimmed her own light so Nathan could shine. Below me stood the reality of what that sacrifice had bought: a husband using my anniversary gift to comfort another woman, a mother-in-law wearing a smile I had funded, and a sister-in-law erasing me from the family narrative with a single click of a camera.
"The file is active, Cassandra," Gerald’s voice crackled through the phone speaker, grounded and absolute. Gerald wasn't just an old contact. He was the managing senior partner at Vance & Sterling, the prestigious forensic defense firm where I had been a senior asset investigator before Nathan convinced me that "our family" needed my full-time devotion.
"How long until the first freeze hits?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly steady as I watched the Mercer family head toward the premium security line.
"For the personal accounts? Ten minutes. The corporate holding accounts for Mercer Medical Consulting? I'm filing the emergency injunction with a federal judge right now based on the embezzlement evidence we flagged three years ago. By the time their flight hits cruising altitude, Nathan’s corporate credit cards will be plastic scrap."

"Good," I said, watching Nathan lean down to adjust a loose strap on the blonde woman's rose-gold suitcase. "Let them fly. It's a long way down."
I hung up, slipped my phone into my trench coat pocket, and walked out of the terminal. The cold afternoon air hit my face, shocking the last remnants of grief out of my system. For ten years, they thought I was the floor. They forgot that the floor holds up the foundation—and if the floor moves, the entire house collapses.
