Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Floor

One year later.

The afternoon sun gleamed off the glass walkway above Terminal C at Logan International Airport. I stood in the exact same spot where, twelve months ago, my life had shattered into a thousand pieces of clarity.

But today, I wasn't looking down at a betrayal.

I was wearing a gorgeous, custom-tailored charcoal trench coat, holding a single leather passport wallet. Beside me stood an international design team from my new global health foundation, discussing the launch of our new pediatric imaging centers in Europe.

My phone buzzed with an alert from a private investigator I kept on a retainer to monitor the fallout. It was a brief status report: Nathan Mercer's first appeal denied. He remains in solitary protective custody due to threats from inmates affected by his medical trials.

I deleted the notification without reading the attached report. The past was an empty account that had been settled in full.

"Ms. Mercer?" my lead architect asked, pointing down toward the security gates. "Our flight to Paris is boarding. The premium lounge is open if you want to catch up on the quarterly reports before takeoff."

I looked through the glass walkway one last time. Down below, families were rushing, travelers were laughing, and the world was moving forward in its beautiful, chaotic rhythm. I felt no anger, no bitterness, and no regret. The cracks in my life had been repaired with reinforced steel.

"Let's go," I smiled, turning away from the glass with a light, easy step.

I walked down the grand stairs, not as a woman who had been left behind, but as a woman who had built her own runway. The floor was solid, unbroken, and completely mine.
