Chapter 10 - The Horizon of the Free

The sun was setting over Silver Lake, painting the sky in deep streaks of violet, amber, and gold. The water was perfectly calm, a vast mirror reflecting the infinite beauty of the sky.
A small crowd had gathered on the new wooden dock. It was a celebration for Lily’s fifteenth birthday and the third anniversary of Silver Lake Creative becoming the largest independent employer in the county. Thomas stood near the grill, his hand finding Rebecca’s, his fingers interlocking with hers with a quiet, protective warmth that had grown naturally over the years.
Lily stood at the end of the dock, her posture long and confident, looking out at the horizon with the eyes of a young woman who knew exactly who she was. She turned back to look at her mother, raising her glass of lemonade in a silent, profound toast.
Rebecca leaned her head against Thomas’s shoulder, her breath caught in a moment of pure, unadulterated happiness.
She looked back at the farmhouse, at the warm lights glowing from the kitchen windows, at the three children who had stood in the pouring rain with wet hair and frightened faces three years ago. They were no longer running. They were no longer hiding. They were grounded in a love that could never be audited, sold, or shut behind a closed door.

The black garbage bag was gone. The rain had washed away the old dust. And as the stars began to appear over the Michigan border, Rebecca closed her eyes and smiled at the whisper that had rewritten her destiny.
The survival was over. The beautiful, brilliant life had finally begun.
