Chapter 3 - The First Legal Strike

The sunrise over Silver Lake was a brilliant, chilly wash of pink and gold. By 8:00 AM, Rebecca was standing in the small, wood-paneled office of Arthur Vance, the town’s only practicing family attorney—a man who had handled her grandmother’s estate and whose hair was the color of winter frost.

Arthur adjusted his spectacles as he looked at the printouts of the text messages, the hotel receipts, and the bank statements Rebecca laid across his desk. Grant was a senior vice president at a regional logistics firm; he was a man who understood contracts, but he was also a man whose arrogance made him careless.

"He’s been moving marital assets, Rebecca," Arthur noted, his finger tracing a series of large wire transfers from their joint savings into an investment account listed under a shell corporation. "He started doing this six months ago. He was preparing to starve you out before he even gave you the papers."

"He told me I was being emotional," Rebecca said, her voice steady, cold, and entirely focused. "He thinks I’m still sitting in a parking lot in Columbus, crying into a steering wheel."

"Well, he’s about to receive a very sobering wake-up call," Arthur smiled grimly. "We’re filing for an emergency ex parte order today. We will freeze every single asset connected to his name, his firm, and that shell corporation. We will demand temporary full custody of the children, child support based on his actual executive salary, and exclusive use of the Silver Lake property."

"Can he come here?" Rebecca asked.

"If he steps foot within five hundred feet of this cottage, the county sheriff will have him in the back of a cruiser before his boots hit the gravel," Arthur promised. "You gave him fourteen years, Rebecca. Now, we take back the interest."

As she walked out of the lawyer's office into the crisp morning air, her phone finally began to ring. The caller ID showed Grant’s office line. She let it ring until it went to voicemail. Then she changed her phone settings, routing every single incoming call from her husband or her family directly to Arthur Vance’s legal portal.

The silence that followed was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard.
