Chapter 2 - The Blue Lights of Cherry Hills

The heavy oak doors of the mansion didn't just open; they seemed to crack under the weight of the law. Two uniform officers burst into the dining room, their boots clicking sharply against the immaculate hardwood floors. The sharp scent of iron and spilled wine hung thick in the air.

"Step away from her, sir!" the lead officer, a burly man with a no-nonsense gaze named Officer Briggs, commanded immediately. His hand hovered over his holster, his eyes locking onto Diego, who still stood with his fists clenched, chest heaving.

"Officer, there’s been a massive misunderstanding," Victoria chimed in instantly, her voice pivoting from panicked pleading to her signature, high-society purr. She smoothed down her silk skirt, attempting to block the view of the blood-stained tablecloth. "My daughter-in-law had a small slip. A plate fell. It’s a clumsy domestic mishap, nothing more."

"A mishap?" Natalie spoke up, her voice trembling but defiant as she pointed at the shattered porcelain still resting near my feet. "He threw it directly at her head. I saw it. We all saw it."

Diego glared at Natalie with pure venom, but Officer Briggs moved quickly, stepping between them and forcing Diego’s hands behind his back. The metallic clink of handcuffs echoing under the crystal chandelier was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

"Valerie, please, think about Caleb's family name!" my father-in-law, Arthur, finally spoke, his voice dropping its calm facade, replaced by a desperate hiss. "If this gets out, it ruins our firm's reputation!"

"Your reputation didn't bleed on the linen, Arthur," I said, my voice ice-cold as a female paramedic guided me toward a chair, pressing a sterile gauze pad against the throbbing gash on my temple. The pain was blinding, but the clarity in my mind was sharper than any shard of that plate.

"Ma'am, we need to take you to the hospital for stitches," the paramedic said gently. "You might have a mild concussion."

"I'll go," I replied, looking directly at Diego as the second officer began marching him toward the foyer. His face was pale, his arrogant posture completely shattered. He looked back at me, searching for the submissive, quiet wife he thought he had married. He found nothing but a stranger looking to burn his world down.

As they wheeled me out on a gurney, the red and blue strobe lights painted the white pillars of the mansion in violent hues. Victoria rushed to the porch, shouting after me, "You will regret this, Valerie! You have nothing without this family! Nothing!"

I didn't answer. I just clutched my handbag tightly against my ribs. Inside it wasn't just my phone—it was a flash drive containing the architectural blueprints and financial ledgers of the Capitol Hill condo. They thought they were trying to steal a piece of real estate. They didn't know I had spent the last six months uncovering the massive tax fraud Diego had been committing using my professional credentials.
