Chapter 7 - The Raid at Cherry Hills

The drive back to the Denver District Attorney’s office felt like a race against a ticking bomb. Leo met me at the entrance, accompanied by Detective Marcus from the white-collar crimes division. Within twenty minutes of listening to Natalie's recording, the atmosphere in the room shifted from a civil divorce dispute to a full-scale federal emergency.

"Substandard concrete on a public medical center?" Detective Marcus said, his face hardening as he picked up his desk phone. "That's an immediate public safety hazard. We have enough for a emergency arrest warrant and a search block on all international flights out of Centennial Airport."

By 5:00 PM, a convoy of police cruisers and federal vehicles blacked out the streets leading to the lavish Vance estate in Cherry Hills. I sat in the passenger seat of Leo’s car, watching from a distance as the tactical teams surrounded the perimeter.

The front doors of the mansion were breached with a thunderous crash.

Through the massive glass windows of the living room, I watched the chaos unfold. Diego was tackled to the floor right next to a massive industrial shredder, papers flying through the air like snow. Arthur was handcuffed while trying to carry a leather briefcase stuffed with gold bars and cash toward the garage.

But it was Victoria who put up the biggest fight. She shrieked like a wild animal as two female officers dragged her out onto the front lawn, her expensive pearl necklace snapping and scattering across the driveway.

She spotted Leo’s car. Her eyes locked onto me through the windshield.

"You did this!" she screamed, her voice hoarse, her face distorted with a terrifying, unhinged rage. "You ungrateful peasant! We made you! You destroy our family over a stupid piece of property?!"

May you like

I rolled down the window, looking down at her from the seat. The scar on my temple throbbed slightly in the evening air, a reminder of the price I had paid for this moment.

"I didn't destroy your family, Victoria," I said clearly, my voice carrying over the sound of the police sirens. "Your greed did. I just refused to let you use my life to build your altar."
