📖 CHAPTER 9: THE WOMAN WHO STARTED TO WAKE UP

Healing is not loud.
It does not announce itself.
It begins with small things.
Breathing without fear.
Eating without shaking.
Sleeping without checking locks three times.
I didn’t notice when it started.
Only that one morning, I didn’t think about snow.
THE CHILD WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING
My son grew quickly.
Children do that when they are no longer inside danger.
He laughed often.
A sound I didn’t recognize at first.
Because I had forgotten what safety sounded like.
Victor visited sometimes.
Never long.
Never intrusive.
Just present.
Like a man learning how to exist in rooms without controlling them.
THE QUESTION I DID NOT EXPECT
One evening, I asked him:
“Did you destroy him because of me?”
Victor didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“No.”
A pause.
May you like
“I destroyed what allowed him to exist.”
That answer stayed with me longer than anything else.
