Chapter 3 - The War Begins

By noon, the house was silent again, but the storm had only just shifted momentum.

I spent the afternoon with Samantha at her downtown office complex. My face was documented by a forensic medical nurse, every bruise measured, photographed, and logged into the state’s evidentiary database.

"The domestic violence charge gives us massive leverage," Samantha explained as she reviewed the paperwork across her glass desk. "In this state, a spouse who commits documented domestic abuse during the marriage is barred from claiming temporary spousal support during divorce proceedings. We are cut-throating his financial lifeline immediately."

"What about his business?" I asked.

Santiago had started a boutique wealth management firm three years ago—Vance Capital. What the public didn't know, but Samantha and I knew intimately, was that Vance Capital was heavily underwritten by a two-million-dollar low-interest loan issued from my father’s family estate trust.

"The loan agreement contains a default clause," Samantha grinned, pulling a thick blue folder from her drawer. "Clause 22: In the event of a material breach of marital obligations or criminal indictment of the debtor, the principal balance becomes fully due and payable within thirty days."

"Call the trust executors," I said without a second thought. "Issue the formal demand for full repayment tomorrow morning."

"He doesn't have two million liquid, Chloe," Samantha warned softly. "If we call that loan, Vance Capital goes into immediate insolvency. He'll be bankrupt by the end of the month."

"He used my money to buy his mother a Mercedes last Christmas while he told me I was wasting money on buying fresh flowers for my dad's grave," I said, my voice dripping with cold malice. "Call the loan."

That evening, I returned to my empty home. For the first time in six years, the air didn't feel heavy with tension. I didn't have to listen for the sound of Santiago’s car driving up, bracing myself for whatever mood he was in. I didn't have to dread Nancy’s unannounced weekend invasions.

I hired a private security team. By 6:00 PM, four armed, professional security guards were stationed at the perimeter gates of the property, and every lock on the estate had been recoded with smart biometric access.

At 8:30 PM, my phone began buzzing relentlessly.

It was an unknown number. I answered, putting it on speaker while drinking a glass of red wine by the fireplace.

"Chloe! You evil, heartless monster!" Nancy’s voice shrieked through the speaker. She was breathing heavily, background noise indicating she was in a busy hotel lobby. "How dare you put my son in a jail cell! Do you know what you’ve done to his reputation?!"

"Hello, Nancy," I said casually. "I hope the hotel room is comfortable. You'll be spending a lot of time there."

"You set him up!" she screamed. "You baited him! Santiago is a good, godly man who sacrificed his life for you! You couldn't even give him a child, and now you destroy his life over a tiny argument?!"

"A tiny argument?" I laughed softly. "He hit me, Nancy. And you stood outside the door encouraging it."

"He was disciplining an disrespectful wife!" Nancy yelled, completely unhinged. "We are going to sue you for every penny you have! Santiago’s lawyer is already preparing a claim for half of your father's estate! You think that prenuptial paper means anything? We'll prove you forced him to sign it under duress!"

"Good luck with that," I replied smoothly. "The prenuptial agreement was drafted by a third-party firm and notarized with video recording six years ago. Santiago was laughing and boasting about marrying into wealth while he signed it."

"You think you’re so smart," Nancy sneered, her voice dropping to a sinister whisper. "You don't know what Santiago has on you, Chloe. You think he was just sitting around these six years being a dumb husband? He has files. He has business records from your father’s old company. If you don't drop the charges and hand over the deed to the house by tomorrow afternoon, we will leak everything to the press. We will ruin your father's memory and send your family business into chaos!"

My hand tightened around the wine glass. My father’s reputation was spotless, but in high-level real estate, mud-slinging—even baseless rumors—could destroy pending development permits and tank investor confidence.

"Is that a threat, Nancy?" I asked quietly.

"It’s a promise, you ungrateful little bitch," Nancy snapped. "Tell your lawyer to draw up a settlement. Half the property, dismissal of assault charges, and a monthly spousal allowance for Santiago. Or your father's legacy dies in the dirt."

She hung up the phone.

I sat in the quiet glow of the fire, my heart hammering against my ribs. Santiago hadn't just been an abusive leech; he had been planning a corporate extortion backup plan all along.

I picked up my phone and dialed Samantha. "We have a problem," I said. "Santiago is trying to blackmail me with my father's corporate files."

"Let him try," Samantha replied instantly. "Because while he was sitting in a holding cell today, I had a forensic accountant start digging into Vance Capital's public tax filings. Chloe... Santiago hasn't just been leasing fancy cars. He’s been embezzling money from his own clients to fund his mother’s lifestyle. He’s walking straight into a trap, and he doesn't even know it."
