Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The collapse of Vance Capital was swift and merciless. Within forty-eight hours, the news hit the local financial headlines: Rising Wealth Manager Indicted on Massive Embezzlement and Fraud Charges.
Santiago’s assets were frozen by court order. His luxury sports car was repossessed, his accounts locked, and he was forced to move into a rundown, one-bedroom motel on the outskirts of the city with Nancy.
Without my money funding their extravagant lifestyle, the mother-son dynamic quickly turned toxic. Neighbors at the motel reported constant screaming matches between the two, with Santiago blaming Nancy for demanding money, and Nancy cursing Santiago for being weak and getting caught.
However, I knew a wounded animal was at its most dangerous when backed into a corner.
Two weeks after the boardroom showdown, I was working late at my estate. The house was quiet, saved for the soft ambient glow of the desk lamps. My private security guards were stationed at the front entry gate and patrolling the perimeter, giving me a rare sense of safety.
Around 11:00 PM, my laptop pinged with an urgent email alert. It was from an anonymous encrypted address.
The subject line read: YOUR FATHER WASN'T A SAINT.
My stomach churned. I opened the email. Inside were scanned documents from fifteen years ago—old financial ledgers from my father’s development company, showing unexplained cash transactions involving an offshore entity in the Cayman Islands. Attached was a short note:
Chloe, You think you won? These documents show your beloved father committed massive tax fraud when building his empire. If you don't drop the criminal charges against Santiago and transfer $5 million into an untraceable offshore account by Friday, these files will be sent to the IRS and every major media outlet in the country. Your father's name will be dragged through the mud, and his estate will be audited into oblivion. - N.V.
My breath caught in my throat. Nancy. She had somehow gotten her hands on old confidential files that Santiago must have stolen from my father's home office years ago when my dad was sick with cancer.
I stared at the scanned documents. My hands shook slightly. My father was my hero. He had raised me alone after my mother passed away, teaching me strength, integrity, and resilience. The thought of his memory being disgraced made my blood run cold.
I immediately forwarded the email to Samantha and called her.
"Samantha, did you see it?" I asked, my voice tight.
"I’m looking at it right now," Samantha replied, her tone grim. "Chloe, take a deep breath. Blackmail is a heavy federal crime, but we need to verify if these documents are genuine or forged first."
"My dad’s company went through three independent federal audits before he passed," I said, trying to rationalize through the panic. "There is no way he was hiding offshore accounts. He was obsessed with legal compliance."
"Then Santiago and Nancy either fabricated these documents or stole partial, incomplete draft records to create a false narrative," Samantha said. "We need an expert to examine the metadata of those scans. But more importantly... we have them dead to rights on extortion."
"I don't care about the extortion charge if it means my dad's reputation gets ruined in the court of public opinion before we can clear his name!" I exclaimed. "You know how the press works, Samantha. Headlines accuse first and ask questions later."
"Then we don't let it hit the press," a deep, smooth voice suddenly broke into the call.
I paused. "Samantha, who is on the line?"
"Chloe, I took the liberty of conferencing in Julian Vance," Samantha said.
I froze. "Julian Vance?"
Julian Vance was Santiago’s estranged older half-brother. Unlike Santiago, who was spoiled, vain, and parasitic, Julian was the black sheep of the Vance family. He was a brilliant, reclusive forensic auditor and corporate investigator who had cut all ties with Nancy and Santiago ten years ago after discovering how toxic they were. He had built an elite private intelligence firm in Chicago.
"Hello, Chloe," Julian’s calm, grounded voice came through the line. "I’m sorry to intrude, but Samantha contacted me yesterday regarding Santiago’s corporate fraud. When I heard what he did to you... I couldn't stay silent."
"Julian..." I stammered, caught off guard. I had only met Julian once, briefly, at my wedding six years ago. He had stayed in the background, given me a sympathetic, almost sad look, left a generous gift, and vanished before the reception ended.
"Those tax documents Nancy sent you?" Julian said smoothly. "They’re a crude fabrication. Santiago tried to use the exact same strategy on my late father’s estate seven years ago to steal my inheritance. He takes legitimate old corporate drafts, alters the numbers using basic document editing software, and uses them to intimidate people who don't know financial forensics."
A massive wave of relief washed over me, so strong I had to sit down. "Are you sure?"
"I’m 100% sure," Julian replied. "And I’m currently on a flight to your city. I have the original, unedited financial archives of your father’s firm from when my firm handled an independent security assessment for him eight years ago. I can prove within five minutes that those documents are fake."

"Why are you helping me, Julian?" I asked softly. "Santiago is your brother."
"Santiago is a predator who hides behind our mother’s madness," Julian said firmly. "And it’s high time someone put an end to both of them. I'll see you tomorrow morning, Chloe."
