Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Kingdom

When Richard arrived at Jessica’s luxury townhouse—the one paid for by the "Hawthorne Meridian Marketing and Client Relations Fund"—he did not use his key. He kicked the front door until the lock gave way, splintering the polished oak frame.

Jessica was in the kitchen, testing the temperature of a bottle, while the toddler, Leo, played with a silver rattle on the rug. She screamed as Richard slammed the door shut behind him, his face purple, his breathing ragged.

"Richard! What is wrong with you? You frightened the baby!" she yelled, rushing toward him with a frown. "And look at the door! What are you—"

He grabbed her by the upper arms, his grip so tight she dropped the bottle. It shattered on the marble floor, milk splashing across his designer shoes.

"Whose are they?" Richard roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandelier above them. "Whose kids are they, Jessica?"

Jessica’s breath hitched. She tried to pull away, but Richard was a large man, driven by a manic, terrifying energy. "Richard, let go of me! You're hurting me! What are you talking about? They're yours! Leo is yours, Marcus is yours!"

"Don't lie to me!" he shrieked, his spit hitting her cheek. "I just came from my executive physical! Dr. Vance showed me the records! I am sterile, Jessica! I've been sterile since I was eleven years old! I can’t have children! I never could!"

The color drained from Jessica’s face so quickly she looked as though she might faint. Her eyes darted toward the hallway, toward her phone, anywhere but Richard’s furious gaze. That split second of hesitation was all the confirmation Richard needed.

He let go of her as if she were covered in venom, stumbling backward. "It's true," he whispered, his voice cracking with a pathetic, childlike horror. "You... you knew."

"Richard, listen to me," Jessica stammered, her hands raised in a pleading gesture. "The clinic... they told me there was a chance... I did it for us! You wanted a legacy so badly. You were under so much pressure from the board, from your mother! You were drowning, Richard! I wanted to give you the one thing Lauren couldn't!"

"Who is the father?" Richard’s voice was dangerously low now, his eyes scanning the luxurious apartment he had funded. "Is it Thomas? From accounting? Or is it that personal trainer you insisted on hiring for 'post-natal recovery'?"

Jessica took a step back, her silence confirming his worst fears.

"You used me," Richard whispered, the realization cutting through his anger, leaving behind a hollow, bleeding wound. "I built a nursery. I took you to the gala. I told my mother... I told the entire board that these were my heirs. I signed over five percent of the company's shares to a trust fund for Leo!"

"Richard, we are a family," Jessica sobbed, reaching for him. "The boys love you. You are their father! Biology doesn't matter—"

"Biology is the only thing that matters!" Richard screamed, his ego fracturing into a thousand jagged pieces. "My name! My legacy! You made me a laughingstock! Do you have any idea what they will say? Do you know what Lauren..."

He stopped. His eyes widened as he remembered my quiet, serene face in the doctor's office. He remembered the past three years of my absolute, unwavering compliance.

She knew.

She had known the entire time. She had watched him parade Jessica’s children. She had watched his mother insult her. She had watched him spend millions on another man's family, all while keeping the golden key to his destruction tucked safely in her pocket.

Richard didn't say another word to Jessica. He turned and ran out of the townhouse, leaving her weeping on the floor, surrounded by spilled milk and broken glass.

From the shadow of a parked car across the street, a private investigator hired by my lawyer, Arthur Pendelton, captured every second of Richard’s frantic exit on a high-definition lens.

I received the photos on my phone ten minutes later. I took a slow sip of my chamomile tea and smiled. The first domino had fallen.
