Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Mistress

Jessica Bennett sat in her living room, surrounded by cardboard boxes. The luxurious life she had built by exploiting Richard’s vanity was dissolving around her like sugar in the rain.
The court had issued an emergency injunction freezing all her accounts pending a full audit of Hawthorne Meridian’s marketing expenses. The luxury car Richard had leased for her had been repossessed that morning. Even the designer clothes in her closet were listed as "company property" purchased with corporate cards, and my lawyers were demanding their return.
The doorbell rang. Jessica rushed to open it, hoping against hope that it was Richard, repentant and ready to run away with her.
Instead, she found me standing on her doorstep.
I was alone, wearing a simple black trench coat. I looked past her into the messy, half-packed apartment.
"May I come in?" I asked, my voice polite and pleasant.
"What do you want, Lauren?" Jessica spat, her voice trembling with anger and fear. "Have you come to gloat? To see the damage you’ve caused?"
"I didn't cause this, Jessica," I said, walking past her and looking at a gold vase on the side table. "You did. You knew Richard’s medical history, didn't you? You knew he was sterile because you found his old medical file in his office back when you were his assistant."
Jessica’s eyes widened, a flicker of panic confirming my suspicion.
"You saw an opportunity," I continued, sitting down on the edge of the sofa. "A wealthy, arrogant man desperately insecure about his inability to produce an heir. You knew that if you got pregnant, he would never question it. He would be too proud to ask for a DNA test because to do so would be to admit his own physical failure."
"He loved me!" Jessica yelled, her hands clenched into fists. "He loved those boys! We were happy until you ruined it!"
"He didn't love you, Jessica. He loved the reflection of himself he saw in your eyes," I said softly. "And now that reflection is gone. Do you know what’s going to happen to you now?"
"I’ll sue him for child support," she sneered. "He signed the birth certificates. Under the law, he is their father."
"You could try," I said, pulling a document from my coat pocket and laying it on the table. "But this is a copy of the paternity fraud lawsuit my legal team has filed on behalf of the Hawthorne Estate. We are also filing charges for grand larceny and conspiracy to commit fraud. If you go to court, we will demand a court-ordered DNA test. The results will become public record. Your children's real father—Thomas from accounting, if my investigators are correct—will be dragged into the light. And since Thomas is also married with three children of his own, I imagine his wife will be very interested in the proceedings."
Jessica’s arrogance crumbled. She sank onto her knees, her face buried in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "Please... please don't do this. Leo is just a baby. He doesn't deserve this."
May you like
"Neither did I, Jessica," I said, standing up and looking down at her. "For nine years, I stood by a man who treated me like an ornament. For five years, I watched you mock me at every public event. You wanted my life, Jessica. Now, you get to see what it's like to live with nothing but the truth."
I turned and walked out of the apartment, leaving her to the ruins of her golden cage.
