Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Narrative

Over the next month, the media coverage surrounding the "Sterling Real Estate Scandal" dominated the local business news.

What Daniel and Evelyn had hoped to keep hidden behind grand marble facades was exposed to the public eye in brutal detail. Newspapers ran front-page stories detailing the multi-million-dollar fraud scheme, the forged signatures, and the horrific domestic violence charges that had brought down one of Seattle's most prominent young developers.

Former high-society "friends" who had once attended lavish dinner parties at Crestview Manor quickly issued public statements distancing themselves from Daniel and Evelyn.

Meanwhile, I focused entirely on my work.

As the newly appointed asset manager for the Oakridge Commercial project, I completely overhauled the development team. I fired Daniel’s overpaid, incompetent cronies and brought in experienced, honest contractors. Within six weeks, construction resumed on schedule, and investor confidence was completely restored.

One afternoon, while reviewing blueprint revisions at the construction site, Arthur Hayes walked up beside me, wearing a yellow hardhat and a heavy trench coat against the drizzling rain.

"You've turned this site around in forty-five days, Sarah," Arthur said, looking up at the rising steel superstructure of the main building. "I've been in real estate for thirty years, and I've rarely seen an operation run this cleanly."

"It's easy to run a business cleanly when you aren't stealing from the foundation, Arthur," I replied with a subtle smile.

Arthur chuckled softly, pulling two warm cups of coffee from a paper tray he was holding. He handed one to me.

I looked at the cardboard cup. It was a simple dark roast from a local diner down the street.

"Is this the right brand?" Arthur joked gently, his eyes filled with warm respect.

I took a sip of the hot coffee, feeling the crisp, clean air fill my lungs.

"It's perfect," I said.
