Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of a Pretender

"This video... it's a deepfake," Preston stammered, his charismatic polish disintegrating into frantic desperation. "Board members, you know me! I built our federal contracts! I brought in the Department of Defense accounts!"
"Did you?" I asked, standing up slowly.
I pulled a second document from my binder.
"Three days ago," I said, looking directly at the lead board member, a retired admiral named Vance Sterling, "I submitted the complete digital audit of our federal contract pipeline to the Inspector General's office. It appears Preston has been using company funds to bribe procurement officers through subcontracts issued directly to Tessa Langley's event management firm."
Admiral Sterling stood up, his face grim. "Is this true, Preston?"
"No! Admiral, listen to me—"
"The Department of Justice," Arthur Pendelton interrupted, checking his watch, "issued three federal subpoenas an hour ago. Federal agents are currently securing Preston’s personal office down the hall."
As if on cue, the heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open. Two officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by corporate security guards, stepped into the room.
"Preston Maddox?" the lead agent asked, pulling a warrant from his coat. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement."
Tessa let out a piercing shriek, jumping to her feet. "Preston! Do something!"
Preston backed away from the table, his eyes darting frantically around the room, searching for an ally, a loophole, a exit. But the board members turned their backs on him. The men who had drunk his whiskey and laughed at his jokes now looked at him as if he were a parasite.
"Greer!" Preston pleaded, his hands trembling as the agents stepped toward him. "Greer, please! Think about what you're doing! We were married for seven years! We can work this out! I’ll leave Tessa! I’ll give up the babies! Just drop the charges!"
Tessa froze, staring at Preston in absolute horro. "What... what did you just say?"
"Shut up, Tessa!" Preston yelled, entirely losing his composure. "This is your fault! Your father said the audit was foolproof! You pushed me to do this now!"
"I pushed you?" Tessa screamed, tears smearing her makeup as she stepped toward him. "You begged me to have your children! You told me she was crazy, that she was ruining your life! I gave up my career for you!"
"You gave up your career because your father’s firm was going bankrupt!" Preston spat back, his true, ugly nature laid bare before the entire room. "You used me just like I used her!"
The board members watched in stunned silence as the two lovers devoured each other in a frenzy of blame and panic.
The FBI agents stepped in, smoothly pulling Preston's arms behind his back and clicking cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Preston turned back to me, his eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of rage and realization. "You knew," he whispered, his voice cracking. "You knew about the Cayman accounts... you knew about the video... how long?"
I walked over to him, stopping mere inches away. I looked into the eyes of the man I had once loved, the man who had treated my heart like a minor obstacle in his rise to power.
"My grandmother taught me that chess is not played by moving pieces," I said softly, so only he could hear. "It is played by letting your opponent believe he is winning right up until he touches your king."

I reached out and gently removed the silver Vance Innovations lapel pin from his suit jacket.
"You are fired, Preston. Effective immediately."
