Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in the Rain
Tessa stood in the center of the grand marble lobby, flanked by two imposing security guards.
She looked utterly destroyed. The immaculate pastel silk blouse was wrinkled, her eyes were red and swollen from hours of crying, and her hair was damp from the rain outside. The designer baby bag hung loosely from her shoulder like a cruel reminder of the life she had tried to build on stolen soil.
When the glass elevators opened and I stepped out, she lunged forward, but the guards instantly blocked her path.
"Greer! Please!" she sobbed, her voice echoing off the marble walls. "Please, just talk to me for five minutes!"
I motioned for the guards to step back. "Leave us."
The guards hesitated, then retreated to the perimeter.
Tessa stumbled forward, dropping to her knees on the polished floor, grabbing the hem of my trousers. "Greer... I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry! Preston lied to me! He told me you didn't love him anymore, that your marriage was over in everything but name!"
I looked down at her, refusing to move away, refusing to show anger. "You sat in my home, Tessa. You held my hand while I wept over failed IVF treatments. Was he lying to you then?"
Tessa flinched as if struck, her tears falling onto the cold marble. "I was weak, Greer! I was jealous of you! You had everything—this company, your grandmother’s legacy, the wealth, the respect! Preston made me feel like I was the center of his world!"
"He made you feel like a weapon," I corrected her, my voice ice-cold. "He used your father’s greed and your insecurity to try to rob me. You didn't fall in love with a man, Tessa. You fell in love with a heist."
"What am I supposed to do now?" she wailed, clutching her baby bag to her chest. "They took the townhouse! My father is going to jail! Preston is in federal custody! I have two newborn babies, Greer! They don't have a home!"
"They will have a home," I said quietly. "I have established a private educational and medical trust for Leo and Maya. Their housing and healthcare will be covered until they reach adulthood."
Tessa gasped, looking up at me in utter disbelief. "You... you did that for my children?"
"I did that for his children," I replied. "Because unlike you and Preston, I do not punish innocent life to satisfy my ego. But hear me clearly, Tessa."
I leaned down, bringing my face close to hers, my eyes locking onto her terrified gaze.
"You will never step foot in this building again. You will never contact me, my family, or my board. If you ever attempt to use those children to seek media attention or financial leverage against Vance Innovations, I will pull every legal string I own to have full custody transferred to a court-appointed state guardian. Do you understand me?"
Tessa nodded frantically, shivering violently. "I understand... I understand... thank you, Greer... thank you..."

"Get up," I said, standing back up to my full height. "Go home to your children. And spend the rest of your life becoming someone they won't be ashamed to call a mother."
I turned on my heel and walked back toward the executive elevators, leaving her crying silently on the floor of the empire she had tried and failed to destroy.
