Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of Violet

By Wednesday afternoon, the news of Jonathan Sterling’s arrest and Ryan Collins’s total financial destruction had sent shockwaves through the corporate landscape of the entire country.

Vertex Dynamics’ stock price, far from crashing, surged by 34% in forty-eight hours as Wall Street celebrated the return of the true visionary founder to the helm.

In the marketing wing on the 12th floor, the atmosphere was thick with anxiety.

Violet sat at her corner desk, her hands shaking as she typed out emails she couldn't focus on.

Every time the elevator doors opened, she flinched, expecting security to arrive and drag her away as well.

At 3:00 p.m., my assistant Sarah walked down the central aisle of the marketing floor, stopping right beside Violet’s desk.

“Ms. Vance wants to see you in the top-floor office, Violet,” Sarah said neutrally. “Now.”

The entire floor went silent. Dozens of eyes watched as Violet slowly stood up, her face drained of all color, her lips trembling as she smoothed down her red skirt and followed Sarah to the private elevator.

When Violet walked into my panoramic office on the 50th floor, I was standing near my desk, holding a warm cup of herbal tea, reviewing a creative campaign proposal.

Violet stood near the door, clutching her hands against her stomach, unable to look me in the eye.

“Ms. Vance...” Violet whimpered, her voice barely audible. “I... I am so sorry. I swear to you, nothing ever happened between me and Ryan! I swear on my life!”

I walked over to my leather armchair and sat down, gesturing for her to take the chair across from me.

“Sit down, Violet,” I said calmly.

Violet sat on the very edge of the chair, looking like a prisoner awaiting a death sentence.

“I know nothing physical happened between you and Ryan, Violet,” I said, taking a sip of tea. “Ryan was too cowardly to actually cheat, and you were far too smart to ruin your career for a man who spent forty minutes in front of a mirror every morning fixing his hair.”

Violet blinked, taking a deep, shuddering breath. “Then... then why am I here? Are you firing me?”

“You allowed Ryan to use you as a weapon,” I said, my voice turning firm, serious, and direct. “The night of the gala, when Ryan looked at me—his exhausted wife who had just carried twin children—he held you up as a gold standard to humiliate me. ‘Look at Violet from marketing. She had a baby and still runs marathons.’”

Violet hung her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I... I didn't ask him to say that...”

“No, you didn't,” I agreed. “But when he said it in front of the team at dinner earlier that week, you didn't correct him. You laughed. You enjoyed being the benchmark used to tear down another woman who was suffering.”

Violet wept silently, burying her face in her hands.

“Women in corporate spaces face enough cruelty, competition, and unrealistic standards from the world, Violet,” I said softly. “When we participate in tearing down another mother just to score points with an arrogant male superior, we degrade ourselves.”

I pulled a file from my desk and slid it across to her.

“I am not firing you, Violet,” I declared.

Violet looked up, her tear-stained eyes wide with total shock. “You’re... you’re not?”

“You are an exceptionally talented marketing director,” I said. “Your brand strategy for the European expansion was brilliant. But your position at Vertex will no longer be about personal status.”

I pointed to the file.

“You are being reassigned as the Lead Director of our new Corporate Maternal Support and Health Initiative,” I explained. “You will design comprehensive post-partum transition programs, flexible remote-work structures, and health support networks for every single working mother in this firm. You will ensure that no woman in Vertex Dynamics is ever made to feel 'swollen, sloppy, or embarrassing' after bringing life into this world.”

Violet stared at the document, then looked up at me, fresh tears flowing down her face—not of fear, but of profound, overwhelming gratitude and shame.

“Ms. Vance...” Violet choked out, standing up and bowing her head deeply. “I... I don't know what to say. I will make this project the greatest work of my life. I promise you.”

“I know you will, Violet,” I smiled warmly. “Now go back downstairs and get to work.”
