Chapter 1 - The Freeze Order

The ICU room was quiet, save for the rhythmic bleeping of the heart monitor and the soft hum of the air conditioner. Mara Chen walked in at 8:00 PM, carrying a leather briefcase that felt heavier than the hospital bed I was lying on. Her sharp eyes took in my bruised throat and the cast on my wrist, hardening instantly.

"The lender processed the withdrawal of the guarantee at 4:30 PM," Mara said, pulling up a chair. "Your parents’ broker scrambled, but without your asset portfolio backing the debt-to-income ratio, the underwriter flagged the file. The loan is officially dead. The seller’s attorney has already issued a default notice. They lose the fifty-five thousand dollars at midnight."

"Good," I whispered, the word scraping against my raw throat. "What about Adrian?"

"He’s been pacing the lobby downstairs for three hours," Mara replied, opening her laptop. "The police took your initial statement, but because Adrian claimed it was a domestic accident—a fall down the stairs—and because your parents initially backed his version to the responding officer last night to avoid a scandal, the detective is waiting for your formal forensic medical report to issue the warrant. But we aren't waiting for the criminal courts to freeze him out financially."

I pointed toward my phone. "He thinks he controls the primary business accounts at Vanguard Consulting. He doesn't realize that when I set up the corporate treasury system, I established a dual-authorization protocol for any outward transfer exceeding ten thousand dollars. He can look at the balance, but he can't move it without my digital signature."

Mara smiled, a cold, clinical expression. "Then let’s revoke his access entirely. As a thirty-eight percent shareholder and the designated Chief Financial Officer in the articles of incorporation, you have the unilateral right to freeze the corporate accounts under Section 4 of the bylaws if there is a suspected breach of fiduciary duty. Siphoning marital assets to cover personal expenditures counts."

With a few keystrokes on Mara’s laptop, using my secure biometric key, we severed Adrian’s access to Vanguard’s primary operating capital. By 9:00 PM, thirty-eight percent of the company’s liquid reserves were swept into an escrow account controlled solely by Mara’s firm.

My phone buzzed on the overbed table. It was a text from my mother: You ruined us. The developer is keeping the deposit. Your father’s blood pressure is through the roof. How could you be so selfish?

I deleted the message without replying. They wanted drama; I was giving them math.
