Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The scandal tore through the city's business sector like wildfire. Vanguard Consulting CEO Arrested for Municipal Fraud and Grand Larceny.
Because the fraud involved public funds meant for urban development, the state prosecutor refused to offer a plea bargain. Adrian’s defense attorney tried to shift the blame to my father, claiming Arthur Vance was the mastermind who established the Nevada entity.
In response, my father turned on Adrian, providing state evidence detailing how Adrian had threatened to cut off their financial support if they didn't assist him in hiding the money from me.
The betrayal was total, symmetrical, and completely devastating to both sides.
Two weeks later, Mara met me at a small cafe near the waterfront to deliver the final update on the legal proceedings.
"Adrian’s bail was revoked after the prosecution showed he attempted to wire funds to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands—funds that were already frozen, by the way," Mara said, taking a sip of her tea. "His trial is set for next month. With the evidence you provided, his lawyer is advising him to plead guilty to minimize the sentence. He’s looking at seven to ten years in state prison."
"And my parents?" I asked, looking out at the water.
"Your father accepted a plea deal," Mara replied gently. "Due to his age and lack of prior criminal record, he’s avoiding jail time but has been sentenced to three years of strict probation and a one-hundred-thousand-dollar fine for tax fraud. To pay it, they’ve had to liquidate their current home and move into a small, rented apartment on the outskirts of the city. Your mother called my office yesterday, begging for your number."
"Did you give it to her?"
"No," Mara said. "Just like you told me."

I leaned back in my chair, feeling the warm summer breeze on my face. The cast on my wrist was gone, replaced by a thin, pale scar that would eventually fade. The fractures in my ribs had healed, and for the first time in six years, I could take a deep, full breath without feeling a single ounce of pain.
They had all thought they could use me as a shield, a bank, or a scapegoat. They had mistaken my silence for submission, and my kindness for weakness. But in trying to break me, they had simply removed the only person who was keeping their lives together.
