Chapter 2 - The Serpent’s Nest

The news of Adrian Vance’s dramatic arrest on charges of domestic assault and massive corporate fraud swept through the elite financial circles of the city like wildfire. By noon, the stock of Vale Hospitality took an inevitable dip, fluctuating wildly as rumors circulated that the charismatic CEO had been led away from his mansion in handcuffs.
Inside the sleek, high-level penthouse office on the forty-fifth floor of the Vale Tower, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
I sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table—the very chair Adrian had occupied for six years. Surrounding me were the senior board members, department heads, and legal advisors. Many of them looked uncomfortable, staring at me as if they were looking at a stranger. For six years, they had known me only as the quiet, grieving heiress who occasionally attended annual shareholder galas in dark dresses, staying silent in the background while her charming husband commanded the room.
"Evelyn," began Marcus Sterling, Victoria's brother and a major shareholder who had always been allied with Adrian. He leaned forward, crossing his arms with an expression of patronizing concern. "We are all deeply saddened by the... personal tragedy... that occurred at your residence. Domestic disputes are terribly unfortunate. However, destabilizing the entire management of a multi-billion-dollar hospitality empire over a domestic incident and some unverified accounting discrepancies is reckless."
I stared at Marcus until he began to fidget under my gaze.
"Unverified accounting discrepancies, Marcus?" I asked, my voice smooth and icy. I tapped a key on my tablet, projecting a massive spreadsheet onto the central glass display wall.
"Over the last three years, three luxury resort development projects in Saint Barthélemy and Monaco reported budget overruns totaling forty-two million dollars," I explained, leaning back in my chair. "Those overruns were paid directly to 'Vanguard Construction Management.' A company registered in Delaware, whose sole shareholder is a trust controlled by Celeste Miller—Adrian’s mother."
The room went dead silent. Marcus opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
"Furthermore," I continued, flicking my wrist to pull up another set of documents, "Marcus, I noticed that your personal consulting firm received a monthly retainer of fifty thousand dollars from Vanguard Construction for 'advisory services' that have zero paper trail. Would you like to explain those services to the board, or would you prefer to explain them to Detective Sloan's team?"
Marcus's face turned beet red. He sank back into his chair, shutting his mouth instantly.
Victoria Sterling looked around the room, her eyes cold and commanding. "As of today, Evelyn Vale is stepping in as acting CEO and Chairwoman of the Board. Her authority is absolute, backed by her sixty-two percent voting control. Any executive who wishes to challenge her leadership is free to tender their resignation immediately. Without severance."
No one moved. No one spoke.
"Good," I said, rising to my feet. "Now, let's get to work. We have a company to save, and a snake to skin."
While I was securing my grip on the corporate machinery, four miles away at the city's central detention facility, Adrian was sitting in a bare holding cell, his silk bathrobe replaced by a drab grey jumpsuit.
The heavy steel door swung open, admitting his mother, Celeste, along with a sharp-featured man in a bespoke navy suit holding a leather briefcase. This was Julian Vance—no relation by blood, but Adrian’s ruthless defense attorney and a man notorious for fixing the unfixable problems of the ultra-rich.
"Adrian!" Celeste cried out, rushing forward to hug her son through the wire mesh screen. "Look at what that ungrateful monster has done to you! Look at this place!"
"Shut up, Mother!" Adrian snarled, banging his fist against the metal counter. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were wild with fury. "Julian! Get me out of here! Post bail! I can't stay in this hole for another hour!"
Julian Vance calmly adjusted his glasses and sat down, pulling out a legal pad. "Bail has been set at five million dollars, Adrian. Given the severity of the financial crimes and the clear video evidence of physical assault, the judge deemed you a flight risk."
"Five million?" Adrian gasped. "Pay it! Use the offshore account in Zurich!"
Julian sighed, shaking his head. "I tried. Evelyn’s legal team filed an emergency injunction at six-thirty this morning. The High Court has frozen every single account tied to your name, your mother's maiden name, and all associated shell entities. You are effectively broke, Adrian."
"What?!" Celeste shrieked. "That's impossible! My money—"
"It was never your money, Mrs. Vance," Julian interrupted bluntly. "It was Vale corporate capital, and Evelyn spent eight years documenting every penny you stole. She didn't just catch you; she laid a trap and waited until you stole enough to trigger federal racketeering charges."
Adrian slammed both hands against the glass, his breath fogging the surface. "She's weak, Julian! She's a broken, weak woman who spent six years crying over her dead father! I slapped her around, for God's sake! She didn't do this alone. Someone is helping her! Who is behind her?"
"No one, Adrian," Julian replied, looking at his client with a mixture of pity and annoyance. "That’s what you fail to understand. You thought you were a mastermind, but you were playing checkers while your wife was a grandmaster at chess. She didn't need help. She was a senior forensic auditor at Deloitte before her father died. She knows every loop, every vault, and every weakness in your system because she designed half of it."
Adrian sank down into his chair, his mind spinning into dark chaos. The image of me standing over him in the dining room, looking down at him with those cold, unflinching eyes, burned into his brain.
"I won't let her win," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and madness. "I will burn Vale Hospitality to the ground before I let her take it back."
May you like
"If you want to survive this, Adrian," Julian warned sternly, "you need to listen to me very carefully. Evelyn has a weakness. Everyone has one. We just need to find what she cares about more than revenge."
Celeste's eyes lit up with a wicked, cunning gleam. "Her father's legacy," she whispered, a sinister smile creeping back onto her face. "She cares about her father's memory. And I know where the old man buried his deepest secrets."
