Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

By the end of my first week as acting CEO, Vale Hospitality was beginning to stabilize. The board had been purged of Adrian's corrupt cronies, the frozen assets were undergoing a complete forensic audit, and the media narrative had shifted from a corporate scandal to a dramatic tale of a female heiress reclaiming her stolen empire.

Yet, despite the victory, my nights were restless.

I stayed in a high-security luxury hotel in the city center, refusing to set foot back in the mansion that had become a violent nightmare. Every time I closed my eyes, I could still feel the stinging heat of Adrian's palm against my cheek, and the cold, indifferent gaze of his mother as she cut her steak.

At two o'clock in the morning, my secure phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown number.

Attached was a single photo.

My breath hitched in my throat. The photo showed the interior of my late father’s private study at our family's countryside estate in Oakridge—a place Adrian was strictly forbidden from entering. In the photo, the floorboards beneath my father's heavy mahogany desk had been ripped up, exposing a small, fireproof steel safe that had been ruthlessly cut open with a blowtorch.

The safe was empty.

Beneath the picture was a short message:“Your father was no saint, Evelyn. Let’s see how much the board loves their founder when his true legacy is published on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.”

My heart pounded against my ribs. My father, Arthur Vale, had been a visionary man, but he was human. Before his death, he had mentioned a secret ledger—documents from thirty years ago when he was forced to make a compromise with a powerful political cartel to secure the land for Vale’s flagship resort. If those documents were leaked out of context, it could destroy the moral standing of Vale Hospitality and tie the company up in endless government litigations, effectively tanking our stock permanently.

I immediately dialed Arthur Vance.

"Evelyn? What’s wrong?" Arthur’s voice was instantly alert despite the late hour.

"Celeste knew about the Oakridge estate," I said, my voice trembling slightly before I forced myself to regain composure. "They broke into my father’s hidden safe. They have the 1994 resort acquisition files."

Arthur cursed under his breath. "That’s extortion. They’re trying to force you into a settlement. If Adrian leaks those files, it will trigger a federal investigation into the company's foundational assets. Even if Vale survives, it could take years to clear the brand's name."

"Where is Celeste right now?" I asked.

"She posted her personal bail yesterday using a high-risk bond company," Arthur replied. "She’s staying at a private residence in the hills—a property owned by Julian Vance’s law firm."

"They think they can use my father's memory to intimidate me," I whispered, staring out the floor-to-ceiling hotel window at the glowing city lights below. "They think I'm still the frightened girl who hid in her room while they picked apart my life."

"What do you want to do, Evelyn?"

"Set up a meeting," I commanded, my eyes narrowing into slits of pure steel. "Tell Julian Vance that I am willing to discuss a global settlement. Tell them to bring the documents."

"Evelyn, that’s dangerous," Arthur warned. "They are desperate. Desperate people do desperate things."

"They aren't the only ones who know how to play dirty, Arthur," I replied softly. "It's time to end this game once and for all."

The following evening, the meeting took place in a private, soundproof conference room at a neutral, high-security law facility downtown.

I arrived flanked by Arthur Vance and two private security guards. Sitting across the table was Julian Vance, looking smug and confident, with Celeste sitting beside him dressed in designer black silk, wearing diamonds that had likely been bought with stolen Vale corporate funds.

Adrian was absent, still locked away in the city jail, but his presence hung heavy over the room.

Julian placed a thick, yellowed manila folder on the glass table between us. He patted it with his hand as if it were a winning lottery ticket.

"Inside this file," Julian began smoothly, "are documents proving that Arthur Vale paid six million dollars in illegal bribes to state officials in 1994 to secure the land rights for the Azure Bay Resort. If this hits the press, the city will revoke the land lease, Vale Hospitality will lose forty percent of its revenue, and your father's legacy will be forever tarnished as a criminal fraud."

Celeste sneered across the table at me, her red lips curling into a triumphant grin. "You thought you were so clever, didn't you, Evelyn? Sending my son to prison, trying to humiliate us. Now, you will drop all criminal charges against Adrian, release our frozen assets, pay us a lump sum of fifty million dollars for our trouble, and let Adrian resign honorably."

I looked at the folder. Then I looked up at Celeste.

Slowly, deliberately, a dark, amused smile spread across my face.

I didn't reach for the folder. Instead, I opened my own leather briefcase and pulled out a single sheet of paper, sliding it across the table toward Julian.

Julian picked it up, his confident posture immediately slackening as he read the title of the document.

"What is this?" Julian muttered, his eyes scanning the lines rapidly.

"That," I said calmly, "is a certified copy of the 1995 Federal Immunity and Confidential Whistleblower Clearance granted to my father, Arthur Vale."

Celeste’s smile froze. "What?"

"My father didn't pay bribes, Celeste," I explained, leaning forward and resting my chin on my laced fingers. "He was working as an undercover informant for the Department of Justice to catch the corrupt politicians who were trying to extort him. He turned over every single dollar, every record, and every name to the FBI thirty years ago. The government cleared him completely, sealed the file, and awarded him full legal title to the property."

Julian's face went completely pale. He dropped the paper onto the table as if it had burned his fingers. "This... this is an official DOJ record."

"Which means," I continued, my voice dropping to a deadly, quiet whisper, "that the yellowed files you stole from my father's safe are useless as blackmail. But the act of breaking into my estate, stealing government-sealed records, and attempting to extort a major corporation? That, Julian, is a brand-new set of federal charges."

I turned my head slowly toward Celeste, whose eyes were now wide with absolute horror.

"And as for you, Celeste," I added, "the surveillance footage from the Oakridge estate caught your personal driver breaking the lock on the study door at two in the morning. Detective Sloan is outside this building right now with an arrest warrant for felony burglary and conspiracy to commit extortion."

Celeste gasped, jumping up from her chair so fast she knocked over her glass of water. "Julian! Do something! Protect me!"

Julian Vance slowly closed his briefcase, stood up, and looked at Celeste with cold professionalism. "I am stepping down as your counsel, Mrs. Vance. This is a conflict of interest, and you have committed a federal crime while on bail."

"Julian! You can't leave me!" she screamed.

The heavy doors of the conference room swung open. Detective Sloan and two federal agents stepped inside.

"Celeste Vance," Sloan announced sternly. "You are under arrest for federal extortion and residential burglary."

As the handcuffs clicked around Celeste's wrists, she began to wail hysterically, thrashing against the officers just as her son had done six days prior. "Evelyn! You monster! We took you in! We made you someone!"

I stood up, smoothing down the front of my tailored blazer. I looked at the sobbing woman being dragged away toward the elevators.

"You didn't make me, Celeste," I said softly, as the elevator doors closed on her screams. "You just woke me up."
