Chapter 3 - The Wounded Lion

By eight o'clock that evening, the story had broken across the financial news outlets.
CHICAGO FINANCIAL TIMES: STERLING LOGISTICS CEO SUSPENDED AMID MASSIVE FINANCIAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION; HEIRESS SARAH STERLING STEPS IN.
I sat in the master bedroom of my private apartment on Lake Shore Drive—a property purchased entirely with my inheritance years before I met Julian.
A celebrity hairstylist named Marcus, whom Arthur had called personally, stood behind me with a pair of professional shears and a razor. He worked gently, transforming the jagged, ruined mess Victoria had left into a razor-sharp, elegant platinum pixie cut.
When he was finished, I looked into the mirror.
The timid, soft-spoken woman who had spent seven years trying to please an ungrateful husband was completely gone. In her place stood a woman with sharp cheekbones, piercing gray eyes, and a look of cold, unyielding authority.
"It suits you, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus whispered, setting down his comb. "It makes you look dangerous."
"I am dangerous, Marcus," I said softly, standing up and buttoning my charcoal-gray silk blouse. "I just forgot for a little while."
My phone buzzed on the vanity. It was Arthur.
"Sarah, Julian is downstairs in your lobby," Arthur said. "Building security called me. He’s causing a scene, demanding to come up."
"Is he alone?"
"No. He brought his personal attorney, Richard Sterling—his cousin. And Victoria is sitting in his car downstairs."
I smiled faintly. "Tell security to let Julian and Richard up. But Victoria stays in the street."
"Are you sure you want to face him alone?" Arthur asked, concerned.
"I’m not alone, Arthur," I said, looking at my reflection. "I have seven years of receipts."
Five minutes later, the private elevator doors opened directly into my foyer.
Julian rushed in, his hair disheveled, his expensive silk tie loosened at his collar. Behind him walked Richard Sterling, looking nervous and holding a worn leather briefcase.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me.
His eyes swept over my new hairstyle, my tailored black trousers, and the absolute lack of emotion on my face. For a fraction of a second, he looked intimidated, stepping back as if he didn't recognize the woman standing in front of him.
"Sarah..." Julian stammered, his voice lacking its usual boisterous authority. "Your... your hair..."
"Do you like it?" I asked, pouring myself a glass of sparkling water from the marble sideboard. "Victoria was very thorough. Though I think my stylist improved on her artistic vision."
Julian swallowed hard, taking a step toward me. "Sarah, this has gone too far. We’re family. You can't do this to me over a personal mistake!"
Richard stepped forward, clearing his throat nervously. "Mrs. Sterling, as Julian’s legal representative, I must advise you that your emergency injunction constitutes an illegal takeover of—"
"Shut up, Richard," I said without looking at him.
Richard froze, his mouth hanging open.
"If you open your mouth again in my apartment," I said, turning my cold gaze toward him, "I will publish the internal audit reports from twenty-twenty-four showing how you billed Sterling Logistics three hundred thousand dollars for legal services that were never rendered."
Richard’s face drained of color. He slowly closed his briefcase, stepped back toward the elevator, and looked at the floor.
Julian glared at his cousin, then looked back at me, his hands clenching into fists. "What do you want, Sarah? Money? You want a divorce settlement? Name your number! I’ll give you thirty percent of the company stock!"
"Thirty percent?" I laughed—a low, melodic sound that carried no warmth. "Julian, you don't own thirty percent. The forensic audit finished three hours ago. You stole four point two million dollars. You pledged unissued corporate shares as collateral for personal loans with offshore bookmakers."
Julian’s eyes widened with genuine horror. "How... how do you know about that?"
"I built the system, Julian," I repeated, stepping closer until I was standing inches away from him. "You were just the handsome face I put behind the desk so the old boys' club in Chicago would buy our shipping contracts. You thought you were the genius. You thought you were the lion."
I leaned in, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
"You were just my manager," I said. "And as of two o'clock today, you're fired."
Julian grabbed my shoulders, his self-control snapping completely. "You bitch! You think you can destroy my life over a haircut?! I built that company! My name is on the front of the building!"
Before he could pull me, the heavy oak front door was pushed open.
Two large, muscular men in dark suits stepped into the foyer, followed by Arthur Vance.
"Get your hands off Mrs. Sterling, Mr. Sterling," the lead security guard said, placing a massive hand on Julian’s chest and shoving him back three feet.
Julian stumbled, catching himself against the wall, breathing heavily.
"This is your formal eviction notice for the suburban estate," Arthur said, holding out a white folder. "The house was purchased by the Sterling-Vane Family Trust in twenty-fifteen. You have until midnight to remove your personal clothing. Security will oversee the removal."
Julian looked at Arthur, then at the guards, and finally at me.
May you like
"You're crazy," Julian spat, tears of rage brimming in his bloodshot eyes. "You think you've won? The board meeting is tomorrow morning! The directors are my friends! They will never vote to install a woman with no executive experience as CEO!"
"We'll see tomorrow morning, Julian," I said, turning my back on him and taking a sip of my water. "Get out of my house."
