Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of Sterling Logistics sat under a heavy, overcast gray sky the following morning.

At eight-thirty AM, executive black sedans were lined up along the entrance curb. The news media had gathered outside the iron gates, camera crews filming every director who entered the building.

Inside the tenth-floor boardroom, twelve men sat around an oval glass table.

These were the senior directors of Sterling Logistics—men in their sixties and seventies, former shipping tycoons, political donors, and hedge fund managers who had spent decades managing Chicago’s corporate hierarchy.

Julian sat at the far end of the table. He had tried his best to clean up his appearance, wearing a crisp dark suit and an expensive watch, but the dark circles under his eyes and his pale skin betrayed his terror.

Victoria stood behind his chair, wearing a modest black dress, trying her best to look like an innocent executive assistant who had been dragged into a domestic dispute.

"Gentlemen," Julian said, standing up and placing his hands on the table. "Thank you for convening on such short notice. What you saw in the news yesterday was a tragic, orchestrated smear campaign by my estranged wife, Sarah."

Director Harrison, an eighty-year-old steel magnate, leaned forward, tapping his pen against his pad. "She froze our operating lines, Julian. Two hundred trucks were stalled yesterday. The stock fell twelve percent in pre-market trading."

"It was an emotional reaction!" Julian pleaded, stepping around his chair. "She found out about a private matter between myself and Ms. Vance. She abused her family trust’s position to attack the company out of spite! I assure you, if you vote to strip her trust of its voting rights under the emergency stability clause, I will have our lines restored by noon!"

"Is that so?" a voice rang out from the back of the room.

The heavy double doors swept open.

I stepped into the boardroom.

I wore a sharply tailored cream-colored pantsuit, my new platinum pixie cut glistening under the bright LED lights. I carried a thin leather folder under my arm. Beside me walked Arthur Vance and two representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The entire boardroom fell silent.

Victoria gasped, backing up until her spine hit the mahogany wall.

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide with shock. "Sarah... you have no right to be in this meeting! This is a private board session!"

"I own fifty-one percent of the voting shares through Sterling-Vane Capital, Julian," I said, walking to the head of the table opposite him. "I am the private board session."

I set my leather folder on the table and looked at the twelve directors.

"Good morning, gentlemen," I said, my voice rich, calm, and commanding. "Before you vote on Julian’s motion, I believe you should review these documents."

Arthur immediately distributed twelve thick blue binders across the table.

"What is this?" Director Harrison asked, opening his binder.

"That," I explained, "is the forensic audit conducted by Deloitte over the last twelve hours. It details four point two million dollars in unauthorized transfers from our infrastructure fund directly into an offshore account owned by Ms. Victoria Vance."

Victoria’s face turned bright white. "That’s a lie! Those were legitimate consultancy fees!"

"Consultancy fees for an administrative assistant earning seventy-five thousand dollars a year?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "I didn't realize filing reports commanded a seven-figure commission, Victoria."

The directors flipped through the pages, their faces growing darker with every passing second.

"My God," Director Harrison whispered, looking up at Julian with disgust. "Julian... you used corporate stock as personal loan collateral with an illegal gambling syndicate in Nevada?"

"It’s... it’s a misunderstanding!" Julian stammered, sweat breaking through his foundation makeup. "Harrison, listen to me! I was going to pay it back next month!"

"With what?" I interrupted, pointing to page twenty-four. "With the pension fund you attempted to restructure last Tuesday?"

The boardroom exploded into loud, furious arguments.

"This is grand theft!" one director shouted.

"We're going to be delisted!" another yelled.

"Silence!" Director Harrison slammed his hand on the table, standing up and staring at Julian. "Julian Sterling, you are relieved of your duties as Chief Executive Officer immediately. Security will escort you from the premises."

"You can't do this!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "I am Sterling Logistics!"

"No, Julian," I said, stepping forward and opening my folder to reveal an official certificate of corporate name change. "You were just a temporary representative. As of nine AM today, the company has officially reverted to its original registered name: Vane Logistics International."

I looked at Victoria, whose hands were shaking so badly she dropped her notebook onto the carpet.

"And as for you, Victoria," I added, glancing at the two SEC officers standing by the door. "These gentlemen have a federal warrant for your arrest regarding interstate wire fraud."

The two officers stepped forward, pulling pair of steel handcuffs from their coats.

Victoria let out a piercing shriek as the cold metal snapped around her wrists. "Julian! Help me! Do something!"

Julian didn't move. He stood glued to the floor, staring at me with a look of pure, unadulterated horror as his mistress was dragged out of the boardroom screaming.

I looked Julian straight in his eyes, my expression cold and unyielding.

"Your five minutes are officially over, Julian," I said.
