Chapter 2 - The Arrest in the Foyer

Ethan froze, his hand still raised in the air, his eyes wide with utter shock.
“Officers, what is the meaning of this?!” Beatrice shrieked, rushing out of her seat. “This is a private family matter! My son did nothing wrong!”
Marcus Vance stepped past the officers, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on my face. His expression darkened when he saw the dark, swollen bruising already rising along my cheekbone and jaw.
“Officer,” Marcus said calmly, pointing his finger directly at Ethan. “My client, Maya Vance-Miller, was physically assaulted moments ago. As you can see, she has visible facial trauma. The assault occurred in the presence of five individuals.”
“She’s lying!” Ethan yelled, backing away toward the dining table. “She fell! She tripped over her purse!”
The lead officer didn't waste a second. He moved swiftly across the foyer, grabbed Ethan’s arm, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him against the wall.
CLICK. CLICK.
The cold steel handcuffs snapped around Ethan’s wrists.
“Ethan Miller, you are under arrest for misdemeanor assault on a female,” the officer announced loudly, reading him his rights. “You have the right to remain silent...”
“Mom! Do something!” Ethan screamed, his face pressed against the drywall. “Julian! Call our lawyer!”
Julian was standing near the table, looking at his phone with a expression of absolute paralysis. “Ethan... my cards are all dead. I can't even pay a lawyer’s retainer!”
Chloe began to cry openly, clutching her designer blouse. “Maya, please! Tell them it was an accident! If Ethan goes to jail, the charity board will cancel my appearance this weekend! Everyone will talk!”
I looked at Chloe with a mixture of cold pity and disgust.
“You stood there and picked up my lipstick while your brother knocked me to the floor, Chloe,” I said softly. “You didn't care about my face. You cared about your weekend outfit. Now you can explain to your charity board why your brother is in a holding cell.”
The second officer turned to me, pulling out a notepad. “Ma'am, do you require medical attention?”
“Yes,” Marcus answered on my behalf. “We are going directly to the emergency room at Charlotte Memorial to document her injuries, obtain a forensic medical examination, and file an emergency temporary protective order.”
Beatrice rushed up to me, her eyes bloodshot with rage and panic. She grabbed my arm with her manicured nails. “You wicked, ungrateful woman! After everything this family did for you! You welcomed you into our home!”
Marcus stepped between us, forcefully removing Beatrice’s hand from my arm.
“Touch my client again, Mrs. Miller,” Marcus warned in a voice that cut like broken glass, “and I will have you arrested as a co-conspirator to assault and witness intimidation. Furthermore, as of twelve-one AM tomorrow, you are officially served with an emergency notice of eviction for this property.”
Beatrice gasped, stumbling back into Julian’s arms. “Eviction?! This is my house!”
“No, Mrs. Miller,” I said, stepping toward the door alongside Marcus and the officers. “It was my house. You were just living on my mercy. And as of tonight, my mercy has run out.”
As the officers marched a screaming, cursing Ethan down the front driveway toward the flashing red-and-blue lights of the police cruiser, I stepped into Marcus’s sleek black sedan.

I didn't look back at the suburban house. I didn't cry.
My cheek burned with excruciating pain, but inside my chest, for the first time in five years, I felt completely, unmistakably free.
