Chapter 8 - The Dissolution and Rebirth

With Ethan safely behind bars, Marcus Vance finalized our absolute divorce proceedings.

Under the final marital dissolution decree signed by the family court judge, Ethan was stripped of all claims to any property, investment trusts, corporate holdings, or pre-marital assets registered under my name.

My legal name was officially restored to Maya Elizabeth Vance.

To celebrate my fresh start, I decided to take a three-month sabbatical from my wealth management firm, traveling to Europe to consult on sustainable international investment initiatives.

While attending a financial conference in Zurich, Switzerland, I met Gabriel Sterling—a brilliant, kind-hearted structural architect from Boston who was heading a non-profit initiative building eco-friendly housing for lower-income communities across North America.

Gabriel was everything Ethan had never been.

He was self-reliant, deeply respectful, incredibly funny, and valued people for who they were, not what they could provide. When he learned about my background in wealth management, he didn't ask for financial favors or investment advice. He simply listened with genuine admiration for my resilience and strength.

Our friendship quickly blossomed into a deep, effortless romance built on mutual respect, clear boundaries, and unconditional support.

For the first time in my life, I experienced what it felt like to be loved without a price tag attached.

One evening, while sitting at an outdoor cafe overlooking Lake Geneva, Gabriel handed me a warm mug of hot chocolate and smiled warmly into my eyes.

“What are you thinking about, Maya?” Gabriel asked softly, resting his hand over mine on the wooden table.

I looked out at the tranquil, glass-like water reflecting the snow-capped Swiss Alps under a twilight sky.

“I was just thinking about how strange life is,” I answered truthfully, leaning into his warm touch. “A year ago, I thought my life was defined by how much I could give to people who didn't care about me. Now I realize my life is defined by how much peace I allow into my heart.”

Gabriel squeezed my hand gently, his eyes filled with absolute sincerity. “You’re safe now, Maya. No one will ever use you again.”
