Chapter 2 - The Caged Beast Fights Back

The rain was falling in soft, quiet sheets over the city as I sat in the back of Mrs. Brooks’ sedan. My left cheek had swollen into a deep shade of purple, but I refused to cover it. I wanted to see it in the rearview mirror. I wanted to remember the exact moment the nightmare ended and the war began.

"We have twenty-four hours before his legal team files for bail," Mrs. Brooks said, adjusting her glasses as she reviewed her tablet. "Victor’s uncle is Richard Hale, a retired supreme court judge. He still has immense influence in the judiciary. They will try to claim the video footage was obtained illegally to render it inadmissible."

"It wasn't," I said firmly. "The cameras were installed in areas of the house where I had legal ownership. The deed to the estate was in both our names until he tried to forge my signature last month."

"Good," Mrs. Brooks nodded, her eyes fierce. "We also have the testimony of his former secretary, Sarah. She reached out to my office an hour ago. She’s willing to testify about the altered financial ledgers."

We arrived at a private, high-security apartment complex on the north side of the city. It was a place Victor didn't know existed, rented under my maiden name six months ago when I first began planning my escape. For the first time in eight years, I turned a key in a lock without wondering what kind of mood the man inside would be in.

I walked inside, turned on the soft warm lights, and poured myself a glass of water. My hands finally began to tremble. The adrenaline that had sustained me through the dinner was fading, leaving behind a cold, hollow exhaustion.

I looked at my reflection in the glass of the window. The bruised woman looking back at me was battered, but she wasn't broken.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated on the counter. It was an unknown number.

I hesitated, then answered.

"You think a night in a cell changes anything, Elena?"

It was Richard Hale, Victor’s uncle. His voice was smooth, cold, and dripping with condescension.

"Judge Hale," I said calmly.

"Listen to me carefully, little girl," Richard said, his tone dropping into a dangerous register. "Victor is a Hale. Our family built this city's judicial system. By tomorrow morning, the judge on duty will sign his bail order. By tomorrow afternoon, the media will carry stories of your 'mental instability' and your 'extramarital affairs' that drove you to fake those videos. You will be ruined. Your attorney will be disbarred. Drop the charges, sign the non-disclosure agreement, and take the ten million settlement we offer. It is the only way you walk away from this alive."

I took a deep breath, clutching the phone tightly. "Are you threatening me, Judge Hale?"

"I am stating a fact. You are a small bird trying to break a cage made of iron. You will only break your own wings."

"Then let them break," I replied. "Because I’m taking the cage down with me."

I hung up the phone before he could respond and immediately forwarded the recording of the call to Mrs. Brooks. In our jurisdiction, recording a caller without consent was a gray area, but for establishing witness tampering, it was invaluable.

The next morning, the news exploded.

Every major network carried headlines about the dramatic arrest of Victor Hale. Photos of him being led out of the restaurant in handcuffs were plastered across the front pages. But as Richard Hale had promised, the media narrative began to shift by noon.

A prominent news blog published a leaked "medical report" alleging I had been treated for severe psychiatric episodes in the past. An anonymous source claimed I had orchestrated the entire scene to steal Victor's fortune amid Hale Meridian's record-breaking fiscal quarter.

Standing by the window of my new apartment, watching the news ticker scroll across the screen, I felt a drop of panic clawing at my chest. The Hale empire was massive, its tentacles reaching into media outlets, police precincts, and courtrooms.

Then, my doorbell rang.

I froze, my heart hammering against my ribs. I checked the security monitor. Standing in the hallway was a tall man in a dark grey suit, holding a leather briefcase. He had sharp silver hair, calm dark eyes, and a posture that commanded quiet authority.

I opened the door slightly, keeping the security chain attached. "Who are you?"

May you like

The man reached into his coat and produced a card, sliding it through the gap.

"My name is Julian Vance," he said softly. "I am the son of Arthur Vance—the lead investor your husband tried to swindle last night. My father sent me. And I think it's time we talk about how to destroy Victor Hale permanently."
