Chapter 3 - Unlikely Allies

I eyed Julian Vance through the narrow gap of the door. He didn't look like Victor's arrogant corporate peers. His eyes were analytical, devoid of the smug entitlement I had grown to despise in wealthy men.
"Why should I trust you?" I asked, keeping my hand on the door handle. "Your father was Victor's primary backer until yesterday."
"My father was lied to," Julian replied calmly. "Hale Meridian owes my family's investment firm over eighty million dollars. Victor didn't just mismanage that money, Mrs. Hale—he laundered it through offshore accounts tied to illegal shell companies. If Victor gets bail today, he will use his family's connections to liquidate those assets and flee the country. My father loses his money, and you lose your justice."
I unlatched the chain and opened the door, stepping aside to let him enter.
Julian walked in, taking in the small, modest apartment with a single sweep of his eyes. He didn't offer pity or awkward condolences about the visible bruise on my face, for which I was silently grateful. Pity made me feel weak; strategy made me feel alive.
He placed his briefcase on the table and opened it, pulling out a stack of financial documents tied with red ribbon.
"What is that?" I asked, joining him at the table.
"Victor's true ledger," Julian said, tapping the papers. "Your lawyer did a brilliant job securing the domestic bank freezes, but Victor was smarter than you thought. He didn't keep his secondary records on company servers. He kept them on a private node hosted through a maritime shipping firm in Singapore."
I frowned. "How did you get this?"
"My firm specializes in international corporate intelligence," Julian explained, looking directly at me. "When my father realized Victor was pulling a shell game, I spent the last twelve hours hacking... let's call it accessing... the Singapore database. These documents prove that Victor wasn't just stealing from investors. He was using Hale Meridian to finance illegal offshore gambling dens owned by his uncle, Judge Richard Hale."
My breath caught in my throat. "Richard Hale..."
"Yes," Julian said, a faint smile touching his lips. "The reason Judge Hale is so eager to get Victor out on bail isn't family loyalty. It's self-preservation. If Victor talks to federal prosecutors to reduce his own sentence, Richard goes to prison for the rest of his life."
The puzzle pieces suddenly snapped into place. The overwhelming power Victor seemed to possess, his immunity from legal consequences, the police officers who used to ignore my emergency calls years ago—it wasn't just Victor. It was an entire corrupt syndicate protected by a supreme court judge.
"The bail hearing is at two o'clock today," I said, glancing at the clock on the wall. It was already 11:30 AM. "Richard Hale has already bribed Judge Montgomery to grant bail without passport surrender."
"Then we don't go to Judge Montgomery," Julian said, pulling a pen from his pocket. "We leak these Singapore files directly to the Federal Anti-Corruption Bureau one hour before the hearing. But to do that, we need a verified signature from a Hale Meridian insider—someone who can attest to the authenticity of the ledger."
"Sarah," I said instantly. "Victor's executive secretary."
"Can you get her to sign?"
"She was terrified of Victor," I murmured, remembering the young woman who used to tremble whenever Victor yelled at her in the office. "But she hated him more than she feared him. Give me thirty minutes."
I called Sarah. When she answered, her voice was shaking. She told me two men in dark suits had been sitting in a car outside her apartment building all morning.
"They're watching me, Mrs. Hale," Sarah sobbed into the phone. "They told me if I go to the courthouse today, they'll make sure I never work in this city again."
"Sarah, listen to me," I said, my voice steady and resolute. "Victor is inside a cell right now. The men outside your door are paper tigers. If you stay silent, they win, and Victor walks free today. If he walks free, he will make sure none of us are safe. But if you stand with me now, we end this today."
Silence hung on the line for several agonizing seconds.
"Where do I sign?" Sarah whispered.
Julian immediately made a call. Within ten minutes, an armored security team dispatched by Vance Capital arrived at Sarah's apartment, safely escorting her out the back entrance while the Hale family's thugs watched the front door.
By 1:15 PM, the authenticated Singapore files were delivered directly to the chief officer of the Federal Anti-Corruption Bureau.
At 2:00 PM, I walked into Courtroom 402, flanked by Mrs. Brooks and Julian Vance.
Victor was already sitting at the defense table, wearing an expensive grey suit provided by his lawyers. His uncle, Judge Richard Hale, sat in the front row of the gallery, exuding calm confidence.
When Victor saw me enter, he smiled—a small, arrogant curl of his lip that said You failed.
His lead defense attorney stood up. "Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the business community. The allegations brought against him are born from a bitter marital dispute. We request bail be set at a reasonable amount, with no travel restrictions."
Judge Montgomery nodded, preparing to strike his gavel. "Bail is set at—"
The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.
Four federal agents stepped inside, led by a woman in a dark blue trench coat holding an arrest warrant bearing a gold federal seal.
"Stop the proceedings, Your Honor," the lead agent announced, her voice ringing clearly through the chamber. "By order of the Federal Circuit Court, Victor Hale and Judge Richard Hale are hereby detained on charges of international money laundering, conspiracy, and racketeering."
The color drained from Judge Richard Hale's face. He stood up, his hand trembling. "This is an outrage! I am a senior member of the bench!"
"Not anymore, Richard," the agent replied coldly. "Search warrants are currently being executed at your residence and your chambers."
Victor panicked. He slammed his hands on the table, turning toward his uncle, then toward me. "Uncle Richard! Do something! You said you handled this!"
"Quiet, you fool!" Richard shouted, his calm facade shattering completely.
The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Photographers flashed light after light as federal marshals moved in, placing handcuffs on both Victor and his uncle.
As Victor was wrestled toward the side door, he locked eyes with me. The arrogance was completely gone, replaced by a desperate, drowning terror.
"Elena!" he screamed, his voice cracking. "Elena, talk to me! Please! I loved you! I still love you!"

I stood straight, looking him dead in the eye, and spoke four words that cut through his desperate screams:
"No one challenges me."
