Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Gambit

Three weeks later, the corporate headquarters of Hartwell Trading was undergoing a complete transformation.
The massive logo on the top floor of the Manhattan tower—which had once read Mercer & Hartwell Trading—was being dismantled by construction workers. In its place, massive bronze letters were being installed: HARTWELL ENTERPRISES REAL ESTATE & CAPITAL.
Inside the corner executive office on the 50th floor, Seraphina sat behind a massive black granite desk. Her recovery had been miraculous; with the proper medical care, targeted biological therapy, and physical rehabilitation, her body had purged the illness entirely. Her strength had returned twofold.
A soft knock came at the door, and her father, Sterling, walked in holding two glasses of sparkling mineral water.
"The federal prosecutors just called," Sterling said, setting a glass on her desk. "Thaddius’s public defender tried to negotiate a plea deal. They offered fifteen years in exchange for guilty pleas on the fraud charges."
Seraphina raised an eyebrow. "And what did the District Attorney say?"
"The DA laughed in his face," Sterling smiled grimly. "With the evidence we provided, the state is pursuing full attempted second-degree murder charges alongside forty counts of federal financial crime. Thaddius is looking at a minimum sentence of forty-five years without parole in a maximum-security federal facility. Clarice and Genevieve are facing twelve to fifteen years each for criminal conspiracy and accessory after the fact."
Seraphina took a sip of her water, looking out over the city skyline.
"Good," she said softly. "They wanted a life of luxury built on my grave. Now they can contemplate luxury from a six-by-eight concrete cell."
"You built an incredible trap, Seraphina," Sterling said, his eyes filled with profound pride. "Most people would have struck immediately out of anger. But you waited. You let them expose every single layer of their greed until they had no escape."
"Anger is emotional, Father," Seraphina replied, turning to look at him. "Strategy is mathematical. Thaddius thought he was playing a chess match against a dying woman. He didn't realize that I owned the board, the pieces, and the room we were sitting in."
Sterling chuckled softly. "So, what is the next step for Hartwell Enterprises?"
Seraphina picked up a thin digital tablet, opening a series of massive development schematics.
"During the three years I was married to Thaddius, I quietly acquired the debt notes on seven major commercial real estate developments across the Northeast," she said, her voice burning with ambitious energy. "Now that the proxy clearings are finalized, we are launching the largest medical research initiative in the state’s history—funded entirely by the liquidated personal assets confiscated from Thaddius, Clarice, and Genevieve."

Sterling smiled deeply. "Poetic justice."
"Not just justice, Father," Seraphina corrected him, her eyes flashing with brilliance. "A complete rewrite of the narrative."
