Chapter 9 - The Ashes of Ambition

Six months later.
Inside the yard of the federal penitentiary, cold winter rain fell steadily against the muddy ground.
Thaddius Mercer stood near the chain-link fence, shivering in his thin denim prison jacket. His hands were raw, calloused, and covered in blisters from his daily mandatory labor assignment in the prison laundry room—washing filthy linens for eight hours a day, earning twelve cents an hour.
Around him, hardened convicts roared with laughter, shouting insults and pushing past him. Thaddius squeezed his eyes shut, leaning his head against the cold steel fence.
Every day was a living nightmare. There were no cashmere sweaters. No eight-thousand-euro bottles of wine. No Matterhorn views. There was only the deafening slam of iron cell doors every evening, the foul institutional food, and the terrifying knowledge that he would spend his entire youth, middle age, and old age inside these bleak gray walls.
A few yards away, a small wall-mounted television inside the recreational shed was tuned to the international news channel.
Thaddius dragged his feet toward the shed, pulled by a sick, tragic compulsion he couldn't control.
On the screen, a breaking news banner flickered: HARTWELL ENTERPRISES ANNOUNCES REVOLUTIONARY GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVE.
The video showed a grand, sunlit auditorium in Paris. Hundreds of diplomats, corporate leaders, and journalists were standing, erupting into thunderous applause.
Stepping up to the podium was Seraphina.
She was breathtaking. She wore a tailored crimson suit that radiated strength, beauty, and absolute authority. Beside her stood her father, Sterling, looking on with radiant pride.
"Today," Seraphina announced into the microphones, her voice echoing clearly through the speaker of the prison television, "we open the first of ten global medical research institutes dedicated to treating rare biological and autoimmune conditions. No patient will ever be turned away. No life will ever be treated as disposable."
The crowd cheered wildly.
The reporter’s voiceover took over: "Seraphina Hartwell, who survived a tragic and high-profile attempted murder by her ex-husband last year, has completely transformed her family’s real estate empire, increasing its valuation to an astonishing thirty billion dollars..."
Thaddius stared at the screen, tears mixing with the freezing rain running down his hollow cheeks.
She was living in the sun. She was building world-changing institutions. She was revered, loved, and immortalized.
And he was a ghost, forgotten in the mud, wearing gray rags, serving a life sentence for a crime that bought him nothing but utter damnation.
He reached out a shaking, dirty hand toward the screen, whispering her name into the cold wind: "Seraphina..."
A heavy hand grabbed his shoulder, shoving him roughly to the ground.

"Get out of the way, new guy!" a massive inmate growled, kicking mud onto Thaddius’s face. "No one cares about your whining. Grab a broom and start sweeping!"
Thaddius lay in the cold mud, weeping silently as the rain washed over him. He had sought to destroy her life, but in the end, he had only erased his own.
