Chapter 2 - THE MORNING OF GLORY

At 11:30 AM the following day, the grand auditorium of Vance Enterprises was packed with journalists, corporate investors, and high-society photographers.
Gavin Vance stood backstage in a bespoke charcoal suit, adjusting his silk tie in a full-length mirror. Beside him, Tessa wore a cream-colored designer dress, looking radiant, though her eyes darted nervously toward the heavy double doors.
Two velvet-lined cribs sat in the green room behind them, guarded by a private nurse Gavin had hired for the occasion.
“Are you sure Claire won't cause a scene?” Tessa whispered, touching Gavin’s arm. “She was too quiet last night, Gavin. It wasn't normal. When I took her husband, I expected her to scream.”
Gavin laughed, a loud, arrogant sound that echoed off the backstage dressing tables.
“Tessa, darling, Claire is a broken woman,” Gavin said smoothly, turning to kiss her forehead. “Her grandmother’s house is already transferred to my name per the signed divorce papers. The company shares her father left her are locked in my trust. She has no money, no husband, and no children. What can she do? Hire a cheap lawyer?”
His mother, Evelyn Vance, walked in wearing a dark purple dress, sipping sparkling water. “She’s probably crying in her pathetic downtown apartment right now. Forget about her, Gavin. Today, the board confirms you as Life Chairman, and we secure the Sterling estate trust for the babies.”
“Exactly,” Gavin smirked. “It’s time.”
At 12:00 PM sharply, Gavin walked onto the main auditorium stage to a thunderous round of applause from the board members and investors. The giant screen behind him displayed the company logo: VANCE ENTERPRISES: BUILDING THE FUTURE.
Gavin stepped up to the crystal podium, beaming at the flashbulbs.
“Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,” Gavin began, holding up his hands for quiet. “Today is a historic day for Vance Enterprises. Not only are we expanding our real estate holdings into the European sector, but on a personal note, I am blessed to announce the arrival of my newborn twins, Leo and Maya.”
The audience cheered politely.
Tessa walked onto the stage carrying one baby, while Evelyn carried the other. Photographers snapped dozens of photos of the 'happy new family.'
“These children represent resilience,” Gavin declared into the microphone, his voice dripping with dramatic emotion. “After years of heartbreak and failed attempts with my former spouse, destiny brought me the family I always deserved.”
“What a touching fairy tale, Gavin.”
A clear, powerful voice sliced through the microphone speakers, echoing from the central aisle of the auditorium.
The applause died instantly.
The crowd turned.
I walked down the red-carpeted aisle of the auditorium.
I wasn't wearing the clothes of a defeated ex-wife. I wore an impeccably tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, six-inch silver heels, and dark red lipstick. Beside me walked Victoria Sterling, flanked by four uniformed officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and two federal agents in dark suits.
Gavin’s smile froze on his face. “Claire? What is the meaning of this security breach? Guards, remove her!”
The two private security guards Gavin had stationed at the stage stepped forward, but one of the federal agents held up a badge.
“Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Agent Ramsey stated coldly. “Stand down immediately.”
The room erupted into frantic whispers. Reporters scrambled to raise their camera lenses.
Gavin gripped the sides of the podium, his face turning pale. “FBI? This is a private corporate event! Claire, if you are upset about the divorce agreement, take it to civil court!”
I stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at him with a look of absolute, calm authority.
“I’m not here about the divorce, Gavin,” I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent auditorium. “I’m here about the two children your mistress is holding.”
Tessa stepped back instinctively, pulling the baby closer to her chest. “Claire, stop it! You’re embarrassing yourself!”
“Victoria,” I said calmly.
Victoria Sterling stepped forward, opening a leather legal folio, and pulled out a stack of court orders.
“Gavin Vance,” Victoria announced into the room, her voice booming off the walls. “We are serving you with an emergency Federal Protective Custody Order, issued by Judge Mary H. Calloway of the First Circuit Court. The two children currently in your possession are being seized by court-appointed medical guardians immediately.”
Evelyn Vance gasped loudly. “Are you insane?! Those are my son’s children!”
“No, Mrs. Vance,” I said, stepping up the wooden stairs onto the stage until I was standing two feet from Gavin. “They aren't his children. And they aren't Tessa’s.”
I pulled a white envelope from my jacket and tossed it onto the podium directly over his speech notes.
“That is a certified maternal and paternal DNA analysis, conducted under judicial supervision,” I said, looking into Gavin’s panicked eyes. “The maternity match for those twins to me—Claire Vance—is 99.9998 percent. The sperm used to create them did not belong to you. It belonged to Julian Sterling.”
A collective, deafening gasp swept across five hundred investors and journalists.
Gavin stared at the paper as if it were a bomb about to detonate. “This... this is a fake! You bribed a lab!”
“We didn't bribe anyone, Gavin,” Agent Ramsey said, stepping onto the stage and pulling steel handcuffs from his belt. “We executed a search warrant on Apex BioTech three hours ago. We found the altered storage logs, the forged destruction certificates, and two hundred thousand dollars in illegal wire transfers to Dr. Harold Vance.”
Tessa dropped her designer handbag, her face completely drained of color as she looked at Gavin in pure terror. “Gavin... you said you handled the clinic! You said she would never know!”
That single sentence from Tessa’s mouth was broadcast directly into twenty live television microphones.
Gavin turned on her, his face twisted in rage. “Shut up, you idiot!”
“Gavin Vance,” Agent Ramsey said, grabbing Gavin’s arm and pinning it behind his back with a sharp click of steel. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical theft, fraud, identity theft, and grand embezzlement.”
As the steel handcuffs locked around his wrists, the photographers went wild, flashes lighting up the stage like lightning.
Evelyn Vance collapsed into an auditorium chair, screaming for her lawyers, while federal agents gently took the two baby cribs and escorted Tessa off the stage under police guard.
Gavin looked at me as he was dragged past, his eyes wide with a mixture of hatred and pathetic, desperate shock.
“You ruined me!” he hissed, his voice raspy. “You set me up!”
May you like
I leaned in close to his ear, my voice smooth as silk.
“You set yourself up ten years ago, Gavin,” I whispered. “When you mistook my love for weakness.”
