Chapter 6 - THE HEIR TO THE EMPIRE

Two weeks later, the boardroom of Vance Enterprises was filled with eighty major shareholders, institutional investors, and press representatives.

The corporate logo behind the main stage had been changed. The name VANCE ENTERPRISES had been legally removed, replaced by the company’s original, historical title: THE MITCHELL HOLDINGS GROUP—in honor of my late father.

I stood at the head of the long mahogany table, wearing a crisp white blazer.

Beside me sat Victoria Sterling and Nina, holding the certified financial audit documents that detailed the complete recovery of the stolen fourteen million dollars, plus an additional twenty million dollars seized from Gavin’s frozen personal assets as punitive damages.

The lead board member, an elderly gentleman named Marcus Vance—Gavin’s uncle, who had voted against Gavin’s corruption—cleared his throat.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” Marcus announced into the microphone. “Following the complete forensic audit and the criminal indictments against Gavin Vance, fifty-two percent of voting shares have been legally restored to Claire Mitchell.”

The room broke into warm, respectful applause.

“Furthermore,” Marcus continued, looking at me with deep respect, “by unanimous vote of the executive committee, Claire Mitchell is hereby appointed Life Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Mitchell Holdings Group.”

I stepped up to the podium, looking out over the room of executives who had once watched Gavin belittle me.

“Thank you,” I said, my voice clear and ringing with absolute confidence. “For ten years, this company was run on greed, deception, and illegal practices. That era is over. Effective today, Mitchell Holdings is redirecting fifteen percent of its annual profits into the Claire Mitchell Reproductive Justice Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting women against medical fraud, embryo theft, and fertility exploitation.”

The room erupted into a standing ovation. Institutional investors stood up, cheering, while reporters snapped photos of the new Chairwoman.

As the meeting adjourned, Victoria walked up beside me, handing me a glass of sparkling water.

“You handled that like a true CEO, Claire,” Victoria smiled.

“I had good teachers,” I replied, taking a sip. “How are the custody proceedings going?”

Victoria’s expression turned infinitely warm. “The family court finalized the decree this morning. The birth certificates have been amended. You are legally recognized as the sole biological and legal mother of Leo and Maya. Gavin Vance has been stripped of all parental rights permanently.”

My heart swelled with a deep, overwhelming warmth that wiped away every lingering shadow of the past ten years.

“Where are they?” I asked, my voice soft with maternal tenderness.

“In your private office,” Victoria smiled. “Frank brought them over from the pediatric center twenty minutes ago.”

I didn't wait. I turned and walked quickly down the carpeted executive corridor toward my new corner office.

I pushed open the door.

A bright, sunlit room greeted me. Two white mahogany cribs sat near the window, overlooking the park. Frank stood near the door, smiling gently, while a professional pediatric nurse sat in an armchair, holding a bottle.

I walked over to the cribs.

Inside lay two tiny, beautiful babies.

One had my dark hair and rounded chin; the other had the distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her left ear—the mark of my mother’s family.

I reached down, gently lifting little Maya into my arms, while pulling Leo close against my chest. They smelled of warm milk, baby lotion, and pure innocence.

Tears finally filled my eyes—not tears of grief, not tears of betrayal, but tears of pure, unadulterated victory and love.

“Hey, sweethearts,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to Maya’s forehead, then to Leo’s cheek. “Welcome home. Mommy’s got you now, and no one is ever going to hurt us again.”
