Chapter 3 - The Discovery in the Nursery

By Tuesday afternoon, I had moved completely out of the suburban house in Cherry Creek and into my private penthouse downtown. The penthouse was a fortress of safety and light—fully staffed by trusted security personnel and designed specifically to give Noah an environment where he could heal, grow, and thrive far away from the toxic fallout of his father’s betrayal.
Noah’s fever had broken completely by Monday night, thanks to the swift, attentive care of the pediatric specialists at Children’s Hospital. Now, sitting on the plush white rug of the penthouse nursery, he was busy stacking wooden building blocks while babbling happily to himself.
My phone chimed on the coffee table. It was an encrypted text from Marcus.
The financial audit of Daniel’s personal accounts just finished. It’s worse than we thought. He wasn't just using company funds for dinners with Mia; he was siphoning development grants meant for our community green projects into a hidden joint account under her name.
I stared at the screen, a cold fury settling deep in my chest.
It wasn't just an affair. It was an organized financial conspiracy designed to drain our family assets while leaving me holding the bag if anything went wrong.
Suddenly, a sharp knock echoed at the private elevator foyer of the penthouse.
I stood up, walked to the hallway monitor, and pressed the security interface.
Standing outside the private elevator doors wasn't Daniel. It was Mia Collins.
She looked entirely different from the trembling, pathetic woman in the cream sweater at the ER. Now, dressed in a designer trench coat with sunglasses pushed up into her hair, she looked desperate and furious. She was pounding her fist against the heavy brass door frame.
I pressed the intercom button. "You are trespassing on private property, Mia. Turn around before I have security escort you off the premises."
"Open the door, Elena!" Mia shrieked through the speaker, her voice cracking with hysteria. "You have no right to freeze my bank accounts! Daniel told me you locked me out of our apartment! How are we supposed to buy groceries? How is Leo supposed to live?"
I couldn't help the cold, humorless chuckle that escaped my lips.
"Your apartment lease was paid for by corporate funds embezzled from my company, Mia," I said evenly into the mic. "The bank accounts were frozen by federal court order because every dime in them belongs to Bennett Holding Group as restitution for fraud. You picked the wrong man to rob."
"You ruined everything!" she screamed, her voice echoing down the stairwell. "You arrogant, cold-hearted bitch! You think you can just destroy our lives because your husband didn't love you enough?"

I tapped the screen, cutting off her audio feed entirely, and watched through the security camera as Keller and two armed guards stepped out of the service elevator, calmly placing plastic zip-ties around her wrists before leading her toward the freight exit.
The game was over. They had nothing left.
