Chapter 4 - The Confession Tape

Wednesday morning brought a formal request from Daniel’s court-appointed defense attorney: a plea for a closed-door deposition before the formal indictments were handed down by the federal prosecutor's office.

Marcus and I arrived at the neutral conference rooms on the fourteenth floor of the federal district building exactly at 10:00 AM.

Daniel sat at the opposite end of a long mahogany table, flanked by a tired public defender who looked like he wanted nothing more than to be anywhere else in the world. Daniel looked broken. The sharp, arrogant project manager was completely gone, replaced by a hollowed-out shell of a man wearing an oversized grey prison jumpsuit.

"Mrs. Hart... Mr. Vance," the public defender began, clearing his throat nervously. "My client wishes to enter a formal cooperation agreement with the prosecution. He is prepared to plead guilty to all counts of wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate identity theft."

I didn't say a word. I simply leaned back in my chair, crossing my legs, and watched Daniel.

Daniel slowly raised his head. His eyes were red-rimmed, staring at me with a desperate, pleading intensity.

"Elena," he whispered, his voice raspy and broken. "I know... I know there's nothing I can say to fix what I did. I was stupid. I let Mia manipulate me... she convinced me that you were too strong, too independent, that you didn't need a husband because you had your father's money..."

"Stop right there, Daniel," I interrupted, my voice dropping the room temperature by ten degrees. "Do not sit there and try to blame a woman you invited into our lives for your own cowardice. You didn't cheat because Mia manipulated you. You cheated because you hated the fact that I didn't need you to survive."

Daniel flinched as if he had been struck.

"You wanted someone small," I continued, leaning forward. "Someone who would look at you like you hung the moon while you played the big corporate hero. But when Noah got sick, when my son was burning with a 103-degree fever, your mask slipped. You didn't care about him, and you didn't care about me. You cared about your image, your convenience, and your mistress."

"Mrs. Hart is submitting a complete evidentiary packet detailing the redirection of corporate funds into offshore accounts controlled jointly by Daniel Hart and Mia Collins," Marcus added calmly, sliding a thick digital thumb drive across the table. "This guarantees a minimum sentence of five years in federal prison with no possibility of early parole."

The public defender glanced at the thumb drive, looked at Daniel, and sighed softly. "Sign it, Daniel. It's the best deal you're going to get."

Daniel picked up the black pen with trembling fingers, his hand shaking so violently he could barely form his signature on the dotted line.

As the ink dried, the final legal tether binding my life to his officially snapped into dust.
