Chapter 5 - The Vance Legacy

The room was absolute chaos, but my presence held it in an iron grip. Richard Langford clutched the mahogany handrail of the staircase, his chest heaving as the audio recording continued to play on a loop through the speakers.
"Thirty years ago," I said, stepping closer, my voice ringing out over the murmurs of the elite crowd, "you took in Eleanor Vance's estate as a court-appointed trustee. You claimed she died without an heir. You buried her medical records, moved her assets into shell accounts in Zurich, and built this entire mansion on stolen wealth."
"You have no proof of who you are!" Vivian shrieked, her face pale and twisted with rage. "You're a nobody from an orphanage! A low-class military girl who tricked my son!"
I slowly unbuttoned the top collar of my dress uniform, pulling back the fabric on my left shoulder to reveal the distinct, rose-shaped birthmark.
A woman in the front row—an elderly socialite wearing a diamond necklace—gasp. "My God... that's Eleanor's mark. It's the Vance mark."
"This is Mrs. Beatrice Montgomery," Major Vance announced, stepping forward beside me. "A lifelong friend of Eleanor Vance and the current sitting chair of the Virginia Historical and Financial Oversight Board. She verified the birthmark records this afternoon against original hospital photographs."
Mrs. Montgomery walked forward, her eyes filled with tears as she looked at me, then at the baby in my arms. "It’s her," the old woman whispered, her voice echoing in the silent room. "She looks just like Eleanor. Richard... what have you done?"
Richard looked around the room frantically. The politicians he had bribed were looking away. His business partners were backing out the side doors. The police chief, who was attending as an honored guest, was already pulling out his mobile phone to call the state detective squad.
"Preston!" Richard barked out. "Where is Preston?!"
"Preston is currently sitting in a police interrogation room in Richmond," I replied calmly. "He was arrested two hours ago after trying to destroy evidence in my safe-deposit box. He sang like a canary, Richard. He gave up the offshore account numbers in exchange for a plea deal."
Richard staggered back a step. His world, forty years in the making, was collapsing around him like a house of cards in a hurricane.
"You took everything from me," I said, my voice dead serious. "You took my mother. You took my husband. You threw me out onto the wet driveway like garbage and thought I would die in a ditch."
I leaned in, just inches from his face.
"I am Harper Vance Quinn. And I’ve come to collect."

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the mansion blew open. A dozen armed federal agents from the FBI and State Police poured into the foyer, led by a stern-faced U.S. Attorney.
"Richard Langford! Vivian Langford!" the lead agent announced, drawing his weapon. "You are under arrest for grand embezzlement, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and first-degree murder in the death of Caleb Langford!"
