Chapter 9 - Legacy of Love

Lily grew into a spirited, bright-eyed three-year-old with her father’s dark hair and her mother’s fierce determination. She ran through the sunlit gardens of the Vance Foundation, followed everywhere by Titan, who, despite his graying muzzle, remained her fiercely protective guardian.
Every morning, I walked through the foundation grounds, meeting with the residents, holding babies, and helping women transition into civilian careers. I didn't sit in a corporate office; I worked on the ground, carrying clipboards, organizing logistics, and reminding every woman who came through our doors that her past did not define her future.
One afternoon, I took Lily down to the river bank at the edge of our property. The autumn air was crisp, turning the trees brilliant shades of gold and orange.
We sat on a large wooden bench overlooking the water. Lily pointed at a pair of bald eagles soaring high above the tree line.
"Look, Mommy! Daddy's birds!" she giggled, clapping her tiny hands.
"Yes, sweetie," I smiled, wrapping my arm around her. "They're watching over us."
Major Vance walked down the path, carrying two hot cups of cocoa. He handed one to me and sat on the edge of the bench.
"The financial audits came through today," Vance reported, taking a sip. "The Vance Foundation is officially self-sustaining. The trust funds will cover all operational costs for the next fifty years. We're opening a second center in San Diego next spring."
"San Diego," I repeated, a warm smile touching my lips. "Caleb would have loved that. That's where we met."
May you like
"You've built something incredible out of ashes, Harper," Vance said quietly, looking at Lily, who was busy throwing small acorns into the water for Titan to chase. "Most people would have broken."
"I thought about breaking," I admitted, looking down at my hands. "That night when they threw my bag into the wet concrete... I felt completely alone. But strength isn't about never falling down. It's about remembering who you are when you get back up."
