Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Iron

Arthur didn't waste a second. Within ten minutes, Noah and I were ushered down the back service elevator of the apartment building, flanked by the two private security guards. We were placed into the back of the armored luxury SUV, the tinted windows shielding us from the prying eyes of the two unmarked sedan cars parked across the street.

As the heavy vehicle accelerated away from the curb, I watched through the rearview mirror as my mother’s silver sedan pulled up to my old apartment building. She stepped out, her face contorted in rage, waving her phone at the security guard left behind to secure the premises. She thought she was coming to enforce an ultimatum; she had no idea the game had completely changed.

Arthur drove us forty miles outside the city limits, deep into the forested foothills where the Westbrook ancestral estate stood behind fifteen-foot wrought-iron gates. The main house was a breathtaking fortress of limestone and dark oak, surrounded by centuries-old gardens.

"This is your home now, Emily," Arthur said as the gates clicked shut behind us with a heavy, mechanical thud. "Under federal estate law, as Noah’s legal guardian, you have immediate occupancy rights to the Westbrook primary property. Thomas Westbrook has been trying to break into this specific house for three years to find his brother’s private ledger, but my legal injunctions have kept him barred from the perimeter."

As we walked through the grand foyer, Noah’s eyes went wide. For a boy who had lived in concrete shelter rooms and crowded foster homes, the vast, sunlit hallways looked like something out of a fantasy book.

But the peace didn't last. By 3:00 p.m., a fleet of local police cruisers arrived at the outer gates, their sirens wailing through the quiet forest. Behind them was a sleek black sports car, and stepping out of the passenger side was Councilman Thomas Westbrook himself, alongside my mother and father.
