Chapter 4 - The Siege at the Gates

I stood by the security monitors in the estate’s private office, watching the camera feeds. My mother was standing right next to Councilman Westbrook, pointing frantically toward the house like a hound tracking a scent. My father stood slightly behind her, looking nervous but determined to collect his corporate reward.
Arthur Pendelton adjusted his tie and picked up a microphone connected to the gate’s intercom system. "Councilman Westbrook. You are currently trespassing on private property protected by a federal estate trust. State your business before I contact the United States Marshals."
Thomas Westbrook stepped up to the intercom speaker, his politician's smile entirely absent, replaced by a cold, arrogant sneer. "Cut the legal theater, Arthur. I have a signed warrant from a local magistrate stating that Emily Carter is mentally incompetent and has unlawfully taken custody of an endangered child. Her parents are right here to testify that she cannot care for herself, let alone an orphan. Open these gates, or my officers will cut through them."
My mother pushed her way to the front, leaning into the microphone. "Emily! Don't ruin your father’s career over this broken child! You drop this adoption right now and come out here, or we will make sure you spend the next five years in a state psychiatric facility! You don't belong in that house!"
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, but before I could retreat into the old patterns of guilt and fear, I felt a small, warm hand slide into mine. Noah was standing beside me, looking up at the monitor. He didn't look afraid anymore; he looked angry. He opened his mouth, his throat working hard, but only a small, breathless gasp came out.

"It's okay, Noah," I whispered, kneeling down to his eye level. "They can't get in here. And they will never, ever take you away from me."
Arthur smiled grimly into the microphone. "Councilman, your local warrant is completely worthless here. Two hours ago, the Federal District Court accepted our emergency petition for the probate of Julian Westbrook’s authentic estate. This property is now under federal jurisdiction. If your officers touch that gate, they will be arrested for interfering with a federal investigation into corporate fraud."
