Chapter 4 - The Public Ledger

Daniel took a frantic step forward, lowering his voice into a harsh whisper. "Mom, stop this right now! You are making a scene in front of my investors!"

"Investors?" Evelyn let out a light, musical laugh that cut through the ballroom air like a razor. "Daniel, darling, these people aren't investors. They are spectators at a crime scene."

She gestured toward the double doors at the back of the hall.

Arthur Pendelton walked through the entrance, flanked by two men in dark suits carrying heavy leather briefcases. Behind them walked two uniformed officers from the County Sheriff’s Department.

The room fell into dead silence. The jazz quartet stopped playing.

"What is this?" Chloe’s father—a thick-set man with white hair and a ruddy face—demanded, pushing his way through the crowd. "Who brought the police into my venue?"

"I did, Mr. Vance," Arthur Pendelton said, his authoritative voice echoing off the high ceilings. He unzipped his primary briefcase and pulled out a stack of court-stamped documents. "I am Arthur Pendelton, counsel for the Vane Estate Trust. I am serving an emergency ex parte injunction issued by Judge Harrison thirty minutes ago."

"An injunction for what?!" Daniel yelled, his composure completely dissolving.

"For the immediate freeze of all commercial accounts belonging to Vance Logistics, Vance & Associates, and Daniel Vane," Arthur declared, handing a copy directly to Chloe’s father. "Including the immediate voiding of the fraudulent quitclaim deed executed against the residential property on Elm Street."

Chloe’s father turned to Daniel, his face flushing dark red. "Daniel... what the hell is he talking about? You said that property was cleared equity from your personal holdings!"

Daniel looked at Chloe, then at his father-in-law, and finally at me. "Claire... tell them to stop. Please. We can talk about this privately! We can work out an agreement!"

I looked at the man I had spent ten years of my life loving. I looked at his polished shoes, his expensive tuxedo, and his frantic, selfish eyes.

I remembered Leo eating cereal in the dark. I remembered Maya shivering under a thin blanket on the couch.

I took a step forward, standing right beside Evelyn.

"We tried talking privately, Daniel," I said, my voice surprisingly steady, echoing across the silent ballroom. "You didn't answer my calls when the power company sent the shutoff notice. You didn't answer when Leo asked why his father wasn't at his birthday party. You can talk to Arthur now."

The lead sheriff stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his utility belt.

"Daniel Vane?" the officer asked.

"Yes?" Daniel stammered, backing away toward the ice sculpture.

"You are under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate forgery," the officer said, taking Daniel’s arm and pinning it behind his back.

"Mom! Tell them!" Daniel screamed as the steel cuff clicked around his wrist. "Mom, I'm your son! You can't let them do this to me!"

Evelyn stood motionless, her hands folded over her handbag, watching her son get handcuffed in front of three hundred of his peers.

"I gave you everything a mother could give a son, Daniel," she said, her voice laced with absolute, heartbreaking finality. "And you traded it for a lie. You will answer to the law, and then you will answer to God. But you will never, ever step foot near my grandchildren again."
