Chapter 6 - The Mother’s Reckoning

Veronica Vance walked up the front steps as if she owned the pavement beneath her feet. She didn't knock softly; she struck the wooden door twice with the heavy gold ring on her right hand.

I went to answer it, but Evelyn placed a hand on my shoulder, gently pushing me behind her.

"I'll take this one, Claire," Evelyn said.

Evelyn swung the door open.

Veronica stood on the porch, her designer coat dusted with light frost. Her face was tight, her lips drawn into a hard, defensive line.

"Evelyn," Veronica said without greeting. "We need to speak inside."

"You are standing on my daughter-in-law's porch, Veronica," Evelyn said, not moving an inch to let her through the threshold. "Say whatever you came to say from there."

Veronica’s eyes flashed with anger. "Your son destroyed my daughter's business last night! He was the CFO of Vance Logistics! He signed those ledger transfers!"

"My son is a foolish boy who was seduced by a family of parasites," Evelyn replied coldly. "Your daughter recruited him specifically because she knew he had access to my family’s trust accounts. Do not play the victim with me, Veronica. I knew your father when he ran barge lines on the river, and I know how your family operates."

"The Vance family name is being dragged through the press!" Veronica hissed, taking a step closer. "If Daniel goes to trial, he will drag Chloe down with him. The district attorney is talking about RICO charges!"

"Then I suggest Chloe buys a very comfortable pair of shoes for prison," Evelyn said without a flicker of emotion.

"Evelyn, listen to reason!" Veronica pleaded, her composure starting to fracture. "We can settle this! We can have the charges against Daniel reduced to civil restitution! My family will return the house equity today—cash transfer! Just tell your lawyer to withdraw the criminal affidavit!"

Evelyn leaned in close, her eyes burning like white-hot coal.

"When I arrived at this house two days ago," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper, "my four-year-old granddaughter was wrapped in a blanket because the heat was off. My grandson was asking if cereal counted as dinner. Your daughter and my son were drinking seventy-dollar bottles of wine while my family starved in the dark."

Veronica opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

"I am going to spend every dime of the Vane estate to ensure your daughter and my son serve every single year the law allows," Evelyn continued, her voice as absolute as judgment day. "Now get off this porch before I call the sheriff to remove you for trespassing."

Veronica backed down the steps, her face pale, her confidence utterly shattered. She turned and practically ran to her sedan.

Evelyn closed the front door with a soft, satisfying click.

She turned to me, adjusted her cashmere cardigan, and smiled faintly.

"Now, Claire," Evelyn said smoothly, "let us go into the kitchen and plan what color we are going to paint the children's rooms once the renovation team arrives on Monday."
