Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light

May 2026.

The sun was warm and brilliant over the private garden of Crestview Manor.

The broad stone patio was filled with soft cream cushions, fresh white hydrangeas, and small tables bearing fresh fruit, pastries, and sparkling champagne.

Clara, now eighteen months old, was running barefoot across the soft, thick grass, her bright laughter ringing through the warm spring air. She wore a simple yellow sundress, her soft golden curls bouncing with every step as she chased a blue butterfly.

Elena Park sat on a wooden bench nearby, holding a tablet, laughing as Clara tried to hand her a freshly picked daisy.

Dr. Aris Thorne and Marcus Hale sat at the patio table, enjoying cold iced tea and discussing the upcoming grand opening of the Sterling Foundation’s first shelter campus.

I walked out onto the patio, wearing a flowing white linen dress, my skin glowing under the sun, a cold glass of lemonade in my hand.

I sat down on the grass beside Clara, pulling her into my lap, tickling her tummy until she let out a loud, musical squeal of joy.

"Look, Mommy!" Clara chirped, pointing her tiny finger toward the sky. "A bird!"

"I see it, sweetie," I smiled, kissing her cheek. "It's flying high."

I looked out over the rolling green hills of the estate, past the stone pillars, past the iron gates that had once been locked against me.

Eighteen months ago, I was a prisoner in a locked bedroom, terrified, barefoot, wondering if my daughter and I would survive the night.

Today, I stood on the foundation of my own making—a mother, a leader, a protector, and a woman who had reclaimed her life completely on her own terms.

The locks were gone. The shadows were gone.

And as my daughter ran through the sunlit grass, laughing under the clear blue sky, I knew that the house we lived in was no longer just a building of stone and wood.

It was a fortress of light, love, and unbroken freedom.
