Chapter 3 - The Tanned Fools Return

The morning sun hit the iron gates of 142 Crestview Manor on day seven, casting crisp shadows across the long, winding cobblestone driveway.

A yellow airport taxi pulled up to the gate at 10:45 AM.

Inside sat Daniel and Vivian. Both were deeply tanned, wearing matching linen resort wear, sunglasses resting on their heads. Vivian was laughing loudly, telling Daniel about the tropical massage she was going to book at the local day spa as soon as they unpacked.

"I hope Emma learned her lesson," Vivian said, pulling out a compact mirror to check her lipstick. "She was getting far too arrogant about her father's money. A week in that room without her phone ought to make her appreciate having a man in the house."

"She’ll be crying, Mom," Daniel said smoothly, though his voice held a slight edge of nervousness. "She’s probably terrified. I’ll go in, let her out, give her a speech about respect, and then she’ll hand over the trust passwords so we can clear up that credit card glitch from the resort."

"Good boy," Vivian patted his knee. "Now tell the driver to open the gate."

Daniel leaned forward, pressing his smartphone against the automated gate sensor on his dashboard app.

Red light.

Error: Access Denied.

Daniel frowned, tapping the screen aggressively. "That's strange. The app isn't syncing."

He rolled down his window, stepping out into the chilly autumn air in his linen shirt, and walked up to the keypad mounted on the stone pillar. He typed in his personal six-digit pin code.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.

System Override: Access Revoked.

"What the hell?" Daniel muttered. He looked up and froze.

Stapled to the center of the wrought-iron gate was a large, weatherproof yellow placard. He leaned in, reading the bold black text:

NOTICE OF EMERGENCY PROTECTIVE ORDER & EVICTION PER ORDER OF THE SUPERIOR COURT OF CONNECTICUT DANIEL VANCE & VIVIAN VANCE ARE HEREBY FORBIDDEN FROM ENTERING THESE PREMISES.

Daniel’s face went completely pale beneath his dark tan.

"Mom..." he choked out. "Mom, come here."

Vivian stepped out of the taxi, her high heels clicking on the asphalt. "What is taking so long, Daniel? I'm exhausted and I need to wash this travel dust off—"

She stopped dead when she saw the sign.

"This... this is a joke," Vivian gasped, her voice shrill. "She can't do this! This is our house! Daniel, break the lock! Call a locksmith!"

Before Daniel could speak, two black unmarked SUVs pulled up behind the taxi, blocking the driveway completely.

Four men in sharp gray suits stepped out. Standing in front was Marcus Hale, holding a thick leather folder, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Greenwich Police Department.

"Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance," Marcus said calmly, his voice echoing in the quiet neighborhood. "Welcome back from Saint Lucia."

Daniel stepped forward, his fists clenched. "Hale?! What the hell are you doing at my house? Where is my wife?! What did you do to Emma?!"

Marcus looked at Daniel with a mixture of cold professional disgust and quiet pity.

"First of all, Mr. Vance, this is not your house. It has never been your house. It is the sole property of the Sterling Legacy Trust, of which Emma Sterling is the sole beneficiary and trustee," Marcus stated clearly.

Officer Ramirez stepped forward, unchipping his handcuffs. "Daniel Vance, you are under arrest for felony unlawful imprisonment, domestic abuse, and grand larceny."

Vivian let out a sharp, ear-splitting shriek. "Arrest?! On what grounds?! She's his wife! She was just being hysterical!"

"Mrs. Vance," Marcus turned his gaze to the older woman, pulling a second document from his folder. "You are also named as a co-conspirator in the grand larceny warrant for the unauthorized theft and international usage of trust financial assets. Furthermore, you have forty-eight hours to vacate any claims to personal property, which has already been lawfully removed from these premises and placed in secure storage."

"Our stuff?!" Vivian screamed, grabbing the iron gate bars and shaking them frantically. "Where is my furniture?! Where are my oil paintings?!"

"Your belongings are at a storage facility in Stamford," Marcus replied coldly. "The key was mailed to your sister. Now, Officer, take him into custody."

As the handcuffs clicked around Daniel’s tanned wrists, he looked past Marcus, staring up at the grand, silent facade of Crestview Manor.

For the first time in his life, the reality hit him: the money, the status, the mansion, the easy luxury he had bragged about to his friends—it had all belonged to the quiet, patient woman he had locked in a bedroom.

And she was never coming back.
