Chapter 5 - The Silver Drive

The room fell dead silent.
Charles stared at the flash drive. Daniel took a step forward, his brow furrowed with anxious curiosity.
"What is that?" Charles asked, his voice dropping an octave.
"That is six months of forensic accounting," I said, stepping closer to the table. "You all assumed I was just a quiet girl from a middle-class family who was lucky enough to work as a junior analyst at Miller & Vance Financial."
"You were a junior analyst," Eleanor spat out through her tears. "A nobody!"
"A nobody who was assigned to audit the tax-exempt filings of the Whitmore Children's Hospital Foundation," I replied.
Eleanor's theatrical sobs stopped instantly. Her face went deathly pale.
Charles’s eyes narrowed. "The foundation is audited every year by top-tier firms. Its records are spotless."
"The public records are spotless, Charles," I said, leaning over the back of an armchair. "Because your wife keeps two sets of books. For seven years, Eleanor has been using the foundation’s medical supply procurement accounts to funnel money into an unregistered offshore holding company in the Cayman Islands called Aura Investments."
Daniel gasped. "Mom... what is she talking about?"
"She's lying!" Eleanor shrieked, standing up so fast her pearl necklace caught on her arm. "She's making it up!"
"Aura Investments has paid out four point two million dollars over the last five years," I continued, ignoring Eleanor entirely. "And do you know where those payouts went, Charles? They didn't go to pediatric cancer research. They went directly toward covering Daniel’s secret gambling debts at the illegal high-stakes club in Atlantic City."
Daniel dropped his scotch glass.

The heavy crystal shattered against the hardwood floor, sending brown liquid and ice cubes splashing across his expensive shoes.
Charles turned to look at his son, his face morphing from anger to sheer horror. "Daniel... what did she just say?"
