Chapter 8 - The Grand Exit

Ten minutes later, the double doors of the ballroom opened.
The two hundred wealthy guests turned their heads as Judge Charles Whitmore stepped up to the microphone on the bandstand. His face was pale, but his voice was trained to remain calm under pressure.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Charles spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "Thank you all for coming tonight to celebrate with us. However... I have an important announcement to make."
The crowd went completely silent.
"Due to sudden, irreconcilable personal differences disclosed earlier this evening, Maya and Daniel have mutually agreed to dissolve their union effective immediately," Charles stated, reading the words like a death sentence. We walked straight through the center of the grand ballroom, past the frozen senators, the stunned judges, and the staring country-club socialites.
As we reached the front doors of the estate, Daniel ran out from the hallway, his shirt unbuttoned, his eyes wild.
"Maya!" he screamed, his voice echoing across the foyer. "Maya, please! Don't walk away like this!"
I stopped at the threshold of the mansion. I turned around slowly, looking at him one last time.

"I spent two years trying to fit into your world, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying over the silent crowd. "I'm so glad your mother showed me how ugly it really was before I got stuck in it."
I turned my back on the Whitmore Estate, stepped out onto the grand stone porch, and walked down the steps into the cool night air.
