Chapter 4 - Desperate Measures

The silence in the conference room was deafening. Donald Hayes looked at the documents in the binder, his legal bravado collapsing instantly as he scanned the paper trail. Every signature was Julian's. Every expense receipt was Marjorie's.

"We need a moment," Hayes said, his tone shifting from combative to subdued.

"You have ten minutes," Arthur Vance replied, checking his watch.

Ten minutes later, Julian walked back into the room alone. His lawyer had stepped outside, likely realizing that defending Julian was a losing battle that would tarnish his own reputation.

Julian slumped into his chair, looking at me with a mix of fear and resentment. "You planned this, didn't you? You set me up."

"I gave you an opportunity to be a partner, Julian," I said, my voice steady and cold. "I gave you a company, a reputation, and a life most men only dream of. All I asked in return was loyalty, respect, and competence. You failed on all three fronts."

"She’s my mother!" Julian shouted, slamming his fist on the table. "What was I supposed to do? Tell her to shut up?"

"Yes!" I slammed my hand down, the sudden sharp noise startling him. "You were supposed to defend your wife! You were supposed to stand up to a bitter, cruel woman who entered my home, destroyed my property, and insulted my character! But you were too much of a coward to bite the hand that fed you, so you let her bite me instead."

Julian swallowed hard, tears of frustration welling in his eyes. "If I sign this, I have nothing. I’ll be broke. My reputation is gone."

"You came into this marriage with nothing, Julian," I reminded him. "You are simply leaving with what you brought."

With a trembling hand, Julian grabbed the pen and signed the uncontested divorce decree, waiving all rights to my assets, my companies, and my estate. He also signed a formal confession of financial irregularities, which my legal team held as collateral to ensure his silence and his mother’s compliance.

As Julian signed the final page, he looked up at me, his voice trembling. "My mother won't survive this humiliation, Amelia."

"Then I suggest she learn to live modestly," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "Starting with apologizing to the public for her lies."

Two hours later, Marjorie Cross issued a rushed, written apology to the press, citing "misunderstandings regarding family finances" and announcing her immediate resignation from all charitable boards. The media circus surrounding the 'cruel heiress' vanished, replaced by headlines detailing the collapse of the Cross family’s fraud.

I thought the war was over. I thought Julian and his mother would retreat into obscurity. But desperate people, when stripped of their illusions, rarely go quietly into the night.
