Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Julian was living in a dingy, furnished one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city, funded by the remaining balance of his personal bank account. The glamour of his old life was gone.

When Marcus knocked down the door at midnight, Julian scrambled backward on his worn sofa, clutching a half-empty glass of cheap whiskey.

"Amelia?" Julian stammered, staring at me as I stepped into the dimly lit apartment, clad in an immaculate white trench coat. "What... what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here!"

I walked over to his coffee table, swept aside the clutter of takeaway boxes, and placed a folder containing the forged power-of-attorney documents directly in front of him.

"You forged my signature, Julian," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "You pledged 20% of my company to Victor Sterling."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically around the room. "I... I was going to pay it back! Victor promised me that if I gave him access to the logistics data, he would give me a 10% cut of his new European venture! I was trying to build my own legacy, Amelia! I wanted to be equal to you!"

"By stealing from me?" I stepped closer, leaning down until I was inches from his face. "By handing my father's greatest enemy the keys to my house?"

"I didn't know he was going to use it against you like this!" Julian cried, collapsing onto his knees, tears streaming down his face. "He threatened me! He said if I didn't give him the voting conversion papers, he’d expose my mother’s foundation debts earlier!"

I looked down at him with utter disgust. He wasn't a mastermind; he was a pathetic, gullible weakling who had been manipulated by everyone around him—first his mother, then Victor Sterling.

"You are going to help me fix this, Julian," I said softly.

"How?" he sobbed. "Victor has the documents! He’s going to ruin us both!"

"No," I replied, pulling a fresh legal document from my coat. "He has a forged document. Which means he committed federal wire fraud by knowingly accepting a fraudulent power of attorney. But for the FBI to arrest him, I need the original recording of the meeting where Victor persuaded you to sign it."

Julian blinked, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "I... I recorded that meeting. On my phone. In case he tried to double-cross me later."

I smiled—a dark, triumphant smile. "Julian, for the first time in your life, your cowardice has actually been useful."
