Chapter 3 - The Expulsion

The atmosphere in the house shifted from shock to siege mentality before the sun had even fully set.
Judith had recovered enough of her venom to order us off the property. "Pack your bags," she had snarled from the doorway of the living room, her voice dripping with venom. "You’ve brought your little circus here, you’ve ruined my family's reputation, and now you expect to stay under my roof? Get out. All of you."
"It’s not your roof, Judith," Frank said, not looking up from his armchair. "The deed to this house is in my name, and the corporate trust belongs to the primary heirs. As far as the law is concerned, you and I haven't been legally man and wife since the separation papers were filed five years ago. You just stayed here to play hostess."
Judith stared at him in horror. "You wouldn't."
"Try me," Frank replied coldly. "Nolan, Cass, you aren't going anywhere. You're staying in the guest wing. Judy, pack your designer bags and call a taxi. You have until morning before I change the locks."
That night, the house was so quiet you could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the hallway like a time bomb.
Nolan sat on the edge of the guest bed in the quiet darkness, staring out the window at the moonlit rose garden where, only twelve hours earlier, Judith had tried to force me to sign away my baby's birthright.
"I didn't know, Cass," Nolan said, his voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioner. "I swear to God, I had no idea about the paternity test. I knew my parents' marriage was a cold war—everyone in the family knew that—but I thought... I thought I was a Vance."
I sat in the armchair, nursing Lyanna while she drifted back to sleep. The milk was warm, the room was safe, but my mind was racing across a landscape of broken glass.
"It doesn't matter whose blood is in your veins, Nolan," I said softly. "Blood didn't make you a good father to Eevee. Love did. And blood didn't stop Judith from trying to destroy us."
Nolan put his head in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking. For the first time since I had met him, the polished, corporate mask was entirely gone. He wasn't Judith's puppet anymore. He was a man whose entire past had been erased and rewritten in the span of a single afternoon.
"She’s going to fight," Nolan muttered, looking up. "Not just about the house. About the trust. About the company. My mother controls fifty percent of the voting shares in Vance Holdings through various proxy accounts. If she realizes she’s losing control, she’ll try to strip every asset we have."
"Let her try," a voice said from the doorway.
We looked up. Frank stood there, leaning on his cane, wearing a dark silk robe. He looked older in the dim hallway light, but there was a fierce, dangerous intelligence in his eyes that proved why he had built the Vance empire in the first place.
"Judy is a vulture," Frank said, stepping into the room and closing the door quietly behind him. "She spent thirty years thinking she could manipulate every string in this family because she knew my secret. But she forgot one very important thing."
"What's that, Frank?" Nolan asked, standing up.
"I’m still the one who holds the master keys to the legal trust," Frank smiled grimly. "And as of this afternoon, my lawyers have already filed an emergency injunction freezing all corporate asset transfers. Judy doesn't have access to a single penny of her slush funds."
Frank looked at me, his gaze softening just a fraction. "And as for your baby, young lady... Lyanna is a Vance by blood, whether Judy likes it or not. Julian—my brother—had dark hair and gray eyes, just like that little girl."
I stared at him. "Julian? But Nolan said—"
May you like
"Julian was my brother," Frank repeated. "Which means Nolan is my nephew by blood, but more importantly, he’s my legal son by adoption and acknowledgment. No court in this state is going to let Judy strip away his inheritance just because she couldn't keep her vows."
Frank turned toward the door, pausing before he stepped out into the hall. "Sleep well, children. Tomorrow, the real war begins."
