Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Queen

While Elena and Nolan sat at the kitchen table sharing decades of lost history over coffee, the legal walls around Judith Vance continued to collapse with terrifying speed.
Evelyn Cross dropped by our house late Thursday evening with a thick stack of court filings and a triumphant smile.
"It’s over," Evelyn announced, setting her briefcase on the dining table and accepting a glass of iced tea from my hand. "Judith’s defense team has formally withdrawn. Between Frank’s financial audit, the embezzlement charges regarding the subsidiary accounts, and the fraudulent proxy filings, she’s facing federal indictment for wire fraud and perjury."
"Where is she?" Nolan asked, walking in from the kitchen with Elena following closely behind.
"She’s holed up in that five-million-dollar condo she bought under a shell corporation in the city," Evelyn replied smoothly. "Except the courts have frozen the condo’s assets, her credit cards have all been declined, and her society friends have suddenly developed a severe case of amnesia whenever her name comes up."
It was a staggering fall from grace. For thirty years, Judith had ruled the local social elite with an iron fist, using charity boards and gala committees as her personal chessboard. Now, she was discovering the cold reality of a life built on sand: when the money and the power vanished, loyalty vanished right along with them.
"Does she know about Elena?" Nolan asked, gesturing to his aunt.
"Not yet," Evelyn said. "And I wouldn't rush to send her an invitation. Judith is desperate. Desperate people do irrational things."
True to Evelyn’s warning, the desperate retaliation came less than twenty-four hours later—not in a courtroom, but at Eevee’s elementary school.
It was Friday afternoon. I was sitting in the living room with Elena and Frank, who had moved into our guest suite while his estate was being thoroughly vetted by forensic accountants. My phone buzzed violently against the coffee table.
Caller ID: Principal Davies - Oakridge Elementary.
My stomach dropped into my shoes.
"Hello?" I answered, my voice instantly tight.
"Mrs. Vance? This is Principal Davies," the voice on the other end said, breathless and panicked. "I’m calling from the main office. There’s... an incident."
"What kind of incident?" I demanded, standing up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.
"A woman claiming to be your daughter’s grandmother—a Mrs. Judith Vance—just checked Eevee out of the front office using an old emergency contact card that was never officially updated in our system," Principal Davies sputtered. "The front desk staff didn't realize her visitation rights had been revoked. They left with her about five minutes ago in a silver town car."
The room went dead silent.

Frank slammed his cane against the floor. "That lunatic has lost her mind!"
"Nolan!" I screamed toward the hallway, dropping the phone as Nolan sprinted into the room, his face pale with horror. "Judith just took Eevee from school!"
