Chapter 4 - The Shadowed Offer

A week passed. The atmosphere in the Carter household was lighter than it had been in years. The cupboards were full, the rent was paid two months in advance, and Sarah had spent every evening submitting resumes to hotels, administrative offices, and high-end restaurants across downtown Chicago.
On Thursday morning, while Rory was sitting on the rug playing with a new set of wooden blocks, Sarah’s phone rang.
"Hello? Sarah Carter speaking."
"Mrs. Carter, good morning," a refined female voice said through the speaker. "My name is Elena Vance, Director of Operations at Kane Global Logistics and Real Estate. I’m calling regarding your application for the executive administrative assistant position."
Sarah blinked, surprised. "My application? I... I don't recall submitting an application to Kane Global."
"Your profile was forwarded to us through an executive recruitment agency," Elena replied smoothly. "We reviewed your administrative background prior to your time at Sterling’s Bistro. Your references and organizational skills align perfectly with our requirements. The position offers an annual salary of eighty-five thousand dollars, full health coverage, and a corporate childcare stipend."
Sarah nearly dropped the phone. Eighty-five thousand dollars? Full health benefits? It was double what she had ever earned in her life.
"I... I'm speechless, Ms. Vance," Sarah stammered. "Is... is this affiliated with Mr. Vincent Kane?"
"Mr. Kane is the chairman of the board," Elena confirmed neutrally. "However, this is a legitimate, high-level corporate role within our logistics division. Mr. Kane values integrity, loyalty, and attention to detail—qualities he believes you possess. We would like you to come in for an interview tomorrow at ten o'clock."
Sarah sat down on the sofa, her mind racing. She knew Vincent Kane was a powerful, dangerous man. But she also knew that he had saved her life and her daughter’s dignity when no one else cared.
"I will be there," Sarah said firmly. "Thank you."
The next morning, dressed in her best black suit, Sarah arrived at the glass tower of Kane Global in the Loop. The building was immaculate—high-security turnstiles, marble floors, and silent, high-speed elevators.
Rory was sitting in a high-end daycare facility two floors below, funded temporarily by the interview stipend Kane Global had provided upon her arrival.
Sarah was escorted to the top floor into a sunlit glass conference room. Sitting at the head of the table was Vincent Kane. Beside him sat Elena Vance and Leo.
Vincent stood up as Sarah entered, indicating the chair opposite him. "Mrs. Carter. Please, sit."
Sarah took her seat, trying to keep her posture straight and professional despite her fluttering heart.
"Mr. Kane," Sarah began softly. "Before we discuss the job... I need to ask you something directly."
Vincent inclined his head slightly. "Go ahead."
"Is this charity?" Sarah asked, looking him straight in the eye. "Because if you are doing this out of pity because of what happened with David Sterling... I cannot accept it. I want to work for my daughter's future, not live on handouts."
Leo let out a quiet, appreciative grunt from the corner of the room.
Vincent leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Mrs. Carter, I don't give charity. Charity creates weakness, and weakness gets people killed in my line of work. I offered you an interview because you managed a chaotic restaurant's inventory and scheduling for two years while being lied to, and you still kept flawless records."
He tapped a blue folder on the table.
"Your former employer was an idiot," Vincent stated plainly. "You ran his business while he drove around in a sports car. I am offering you a job managing the scheduling and logistical records for twelve shipping terminals across the Midwest. It is hard work. It requires twelve-hour days sometimes. But you will be paid what you are worth, on time, every Friday."
Sarah looked at the folder, then at Vincent. She saw no deception in his eyes—only pure, uncompromising pragmatism.

"When do I start?" Sarah asked.
Vincent allowed himself a tiny, rare smile. "Monday at eight AM. Welcome to Kane Global, Sarah."
