Chapter 5 - The Rising Storm

The next three months transformed the lives of Sarah and Rory Carter.
Sarah proved to be an absolute powerhouse at Kane Global. Her sharp eye for detail, unyielding work ethic, and quiet resilience made her indispensable to Elena Vance within weeks. She caught a two-hundred-thousand-dollar billing error in a regional supply chain contract during her second week, earning the immediate respect of the senior staff.
For the first time in her life, Sarah felt financially secure. She moved into a safe, sunlit two-bedroom apartment in Lincoln Park, enrolled Rory in a top-tier preschool, and paid off her late husband’s remaining medical debts.
Rory thrived. She grew taller, her cheeks filled out with healthy color, and her vibrant, fearless personality shone brightly.
Every Tuesday afternoon, when Sarah had late operational meetings, Rory would sit quietly in the corner of Vincent Kane’s executive suite, coloring in her books while Vincent worked at his massive desk.
A strange, quiet bond had formed between the terrifying chairman of Chicago’s underworld and the four-and-a-half-year-old girl. Vincent, a man who had no children and had spent his life surrounded by violence, greed, and deception, found a strange kind of peace in Rory's absolute, unfiltered honesty.
He bought her a high-end set of professional colored pencils. She drew him pictures of mountains, ocean ships, and stylized purple stars. Vincent framed one of her drawings—a picture of a big house with seven stars in the sky—and placed it on his desk right beside his corporate seal.
However, peace in Chicago was always a temporary illusion.
In late October, a rival syndicate from Detroit, led by a ruthless operator named Victor Moretti, began making aggressive moves into Chicago’s logistics corridors. Moretti wanted control of the shipping terminals that Kane Global managed.
One rainy Tuesday evening, while Sarah was finishing an emergency audit on the forty-second floor, Vincent sat in his office with Leo.
"Moretti’s men were spotted near the Southside rail yard," Leo reported, his face grave. "They’re trying to force the local union bosses to sign over transit rights."
"Moretti is sloppy," Vincent said coldly. "He thinks brute force can replace leverage."
Before Leo could reply, the phone on Vincent’s desk buzzed. It was the security desk at the main entrance.
"Mr. Kane," the guard's tense voice came through the speaker. "We have a situation in the underground parking garage. A dark sedan just blew through the security gate. Two armed men."
Vincent stood up instantly, his instincts honed by decades of survival. "Where is Sarah Carter?"
"She’s in the archive room on floor forty-one, sir," Leo said, pulling a sleek black handgun from his shoulder holster. "Rory is in the executive lobby with Elena!"
At that exact second, the lights in the skyscraper flickered wildly and died, plunging the forty-second floor into emergency red backup lighting. The electronic locks on the floor doors chimed as the security lockdown engaged automatically.

Through the glass windows of the executive suite, Vincent heard the distant, muffled sound of a fire alarm ringing from the lower floors.
Moretti wasn't just making a move at the rail yard. He had sent a hit squad directly to Kane Global’s headquarters.
